Just over two weeks after a parent of a 12-year-old boy had approached the child’s Covington, Tennessee school with rape allegations, 38-year-old teacher and mother of two Alissa McCommon was arrested outside her home Friday by the Covington Police Department.
According to a report from WREG, August 24, the same day the Charger Academy had learned their fourth grade English and Social Studies teacher was accused of raping the boy during a 2021 encounter at her home, McCommon was placed on unpaid leave.
The arrest sparked an investigation into the suspended teacher’s behavior with other minors and, according to law enforcement officials, the suspect had confessed to speaking inappropriately with former students.
However, investigators are seeking to determine if whether more than talk took place after other alleged victims had come forward since the initial allegation with claims that they too had been subject to, at the very least, inappropriate solicitations from McCommon.
“It is unbearable. It’s unspeakable and it’s 100 percent preventable. I think that’s why the detectives and we are so passionate about making sure victims are okay,” Covington Police Chief Donna Turner told WREG.
The unspecified number of victims had gone on to allege that the teacher had made contact with them on social media where she would play games with them and chat online before, ultimately, she was said to have sent risque photographs of herself and solicited sexual encounters with the minors.
Reacting to the allegations, McCommon’s defense attorney Jere Mason expressed, “We believe that it’s borderline a witch hunt on social media and that’s frustrating to us. What we’re asking is that the public be patient and allow the justice system to do its job and not create further persecution on the alleged victims or on the family of the defendant.”
Meanwhile, parent’s described their reaction to the teacher’s arrest with on telling Fox 13 that she had met McCommon but, “There were no red flags for me.”
Another mother, Bianca Taylor, spoke to parental frustration having only learned about the allegations against the teacher through a Facebook post two weeks after her suspension.
“I do hope they take matters seriously, because any other situation — if it was a man doing it the opposite way, y’all would take it more seriously. Even if she did it or didn’t do it, it needs to be looked at and not swept under the rug.”
The Covington Police Department detailed that McCommon had been transported to the Tipton County Jail and had a bond set at $25,000. Furthermore, Chief Turner indicated that she had spoken with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, “and we intend to pursue any appropriate federal charges related to the sexual exploitation of these victims utilizing cellphones, inappropriate relations, and activities across jurisdictional State lines. We will prosecute this case to the fullest and will continue to support the victims and their families during all aspects of the investigation.”
McCommon is expected to make an appearance in court on Oct. 13.
