Elon Musk pledges $1M to murals honoring murdered Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska

Elon Musk is joining an initiative to spread murals across major U.S. cities honoring the Ukrainian refugee who was murdered in North Carolina.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO responded to a social media post announcing the effort by Eoghan McCabe, CEO and founder of Intercom, to pay tribute to Iryna Zarutska, the 23-year-old who was killed when taking a train in Charlotte.

Musk pledged $1 million to McCabe’s fundraising campaign, which he announced on X this week.

“I am offering $500k in $10k grants to paint murals of the face of Iryna Zarutska in prominent U.S. city locations,” McCabe wrote. “Please contact [email protected] for more details. Please also share this message. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please contact Katie also.”

“I will contribute $1M,” Musk wrote in the comments, earning thanks from the entrepreneur from Ireland.

Fox News reported:

A person working with the campaign who spoke with Fox News Digital under the condition of anonymity said that they are currently in talks with more than 1,000 artists across the country and are looking for the right locations for the murals. There are also poster campaigns in the works, which will appear in major U.S. cities.

The person also said that McCabe was inspired by a desire to not let Zarutska be forgotten or ignored by mainstream media after her life was taken in such a brutal way. The person also cited a realization about the failures of leftist policies.

“We now have funding for nearly 300 murals and we’re in touch with 800 interested artists. We’ll start to commission work in a few days,” McCabe noted in a follow-up post on X.

“Iryna Zarutska did not ask to be a martyr,” a GiveSendGo campaign reads.

“But you can help make sure there is at least some meaning in her brutal death. We will install as many posters and murals across this great nation as funds afford so that the important conversations her slaying provokes may perpetuate and drive much needed change,” the page states.

“Eoghan McCabe is donating $500k and looking for other sponsors. Every dollar beyond that donated here will help. Eoghan’s team will ensure all installations are in high visibility locations, are well executed, and are completed legally,” it concludes.

As of this writing, that campaign has raised just over $82,000 toward its $100,000 goal.

On X, users applauded the effort to honor the young victim who came to the U.S. in 2022 to escape the Russia-Ukraine war, and many offered more.
