Elon Musk presents the ‘future of transport’ as Tesla rolls out Cybercab

X owner Elon Musk is pushing transportation into the future with Tesla’s latest innovation: the Cybercab.

Transportation costs are skyrocketing, but Musk’s latest idea may provide a more reasonable alternative to the crowding of public transportation and the expense of rideshares. The Tesla website describes the “robotaxi” as an “autonomous vehicle” that is “changing the way people travel by making transportation more efficient, affordable and accessible than ever before.”

“Hail your car and use it for errands, commuting and more. Designed for full autonomy without a steering wheel or pedals. Features bench-style seating suitable for up to two passengers and a center touchscreen, plus enough trunk space for luggage, golf clubs, scooters and more,” the Cybercab description explains.

Need more room? The Model Y and Robovan can seat 4 or more passengers and those with accessibility needs, with the same amenities as the standard model.

“Autonomous Robotaxi rides are currently being offered across the U.S. in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa,” the website boasts.

Those who have already taken rides in the Cybercab have good things to say:

“Manually operated vehicles are done for. This is by far the best way to be transported to your destination. The Tesla Cybercab offers an experience like no other. If you need to work, it provides solitude. If you’re tired, you can recline the seats and lie down. If you want to be entertained, you have a plethora of options like YouTube, Netflix, and games. There is no burden or wasted time in one of these. Use it as your office, or living room,” writes X user Nic Cruz Patane.

“I’ve now done a total of 3 hours riding around in [Tesla]’s Cybercab and spent a total of $92.51. That travel time would have cost me $200 with Ubers,” Sawyer Merritt wrote. “My longest ride has been ~40 minutes. I legitimately can’t come up with any major complaints for FSD V15. None. I’ve spoken to a handful of other people here who say the same. I didn’t need to call rider support once. No weird maneuvers, jitteriness, or hesitation.”

“I do think pickup and drop-off locations could use some tweaking (same for Model Y) as you need to walk a bit sometimes, but I think that will get better as V15 progresses. Two things you surprisingly get used to very quickly are having no rearview mirror and no side mirrors. For anyone else trying Cybercab for the first time, I encourage you to recline your seat all the way back and just close your eyes for a minute. Realizing that you can nap in the spot where a driver traditionally sat while the car drives you around with no steering wheel or pedals is a pretty surreal feeling,” he added.

Musk called it the “future of transport.”
