The notion of imposing one’s will on others is seldom popular, especially in the restaurant industry.
Pho Ha Noi, a Vietnamese restaurant in California, is feeling the heat after being exposed for mandating an 18% service charge “for parties of one or larger,” according to a receipt shared online by a customer.
Automatic service charges are common in the food industry when it comes to large parties, but the Reddit user who shared the photo of the receipt wasn’t too happy with the extension of that policy.
“I’ve seen restaurants include gratuity when it’s a large party but never for parties of 1!” the patron wrote.
The receipt showed a subtotal of $49.50 for the meal, but the $8.91 service charge and sales tax pushed the total to $62.93

Restaurants were hit as hard as anyone during the COVID-19 pandemic with many still struggling to find solid footing, but ticking off customers is not the way to go about recovering.
Here are just a few of the responses to the story seen on Reddit:
“For parties of 1 or larger? What a convoluted way of saying everybody is charged 18%.”
“If the service charge is not posted on the doors, or menu you can opt to not pay. It was not disclosed before purchase. I would simply revise the bill and not pay.”
“There is a place in town that adds an extra 20% ;living wage increase’; to all orders. But they make a point of saying that it isn’t a tip. My wife then insists on tipping 20% on top of that. We don’t go there anymore.”
“‘‘Hello I’d like to reserve a table for 0 people.’ Checkmate.”
“F–k that then. Just another place I wouldn’t need to eat out at.”
“No better way of saying ‘we definitely do not pay our workers enough.’”
