Family kicked out of cafe over tantrum-throwing toddlers – was owner in the right?

A business owner, a family and a “witness” stirred debate over the shopkeeper’s response to a toddler tantrum.

The beginning of the new year kicked off with controversy for the owner of Adele’s Cafe on Magnetic Island off the coast of Townsville, Australia. In addition to having to ask a customer to leave for the first time in nearly a decade of business, a mom’s social media post attempted to cancel his shop over the incident.

“Adele’s Cafe — do not support. Absolutely disgusting. Don’t support this business,” said Laura Edwards in a video shared by the Townsville Bulletin.

Speaking with the Daily Mail, the woman, herself a reported mother of three, had decried the shopkeeper, Adrian Dalloste, for booting a family of four after the children, aged two and three, had a tantrum when they were informed they would be sharing a single scoop of gelato.

“It is sad and shows we have a long way to go from children being seen and not heard and understanding the research into the brain development of children,” she asserted. “He could have asked them if they needed any help or asked one of the parents to take the crying toddlers for a walk but he just kicked them out.”

“I think sometimes you do get looked down upon when having kids, especially if they’re having tantrums and stuff, but their brains aren’t fully developed at that age, and they need help to process those emotions,” she went on.

Edwards account hardly told the whole story as the co-owner, Dalloste, told the Bulletin, “Both children became upset when told they would be sharing a gelato between them, one of the children swiped decorations from the counter and threw a steel flask on the tile floor.”

Even then, as he detailed to the Daily Mail, “My staff member looked at me like ‘what should we do’ and I waved my hands like it will be over a minute — but they didn’t leave, they sat at a table outside.”

“For approximately 15 minutes,” Dalloste told the Bulletin, “the children were crying and screaming disturbing the other clientele trying to enjoy their meals and [the] ambiance of the cafe. The crying and screaming was constant and loud,” he explained.

When he confronted them over the tantrum, he said to the Mail, “The mother appeared shocked. The father told me it was bad business and I told him, [no] it is bad parenting.”

“This is the first time in eight and a half years that I have needed to ask someone to leave. I don’t like to do it but it was loud, the older one was absolutely screeching,” he recounted.

Dalloste also addressed Edwards claims, her video, and her comments about his business and argued, “She came in and told us we were disgusting but she was sitting around the other side and hadn’t witnessed it. Then she went on social media to post a video telling people not to come to see us.”

The day the incident was reported, Adele’s Cafe posted on Facebook, “Hi lovely people! Happy 2024!! What would you like to see from us this year?”

The commentary supported his decision as one person said, “…it’s your business, you are allowed to ask customers to leave whenever you feel the need to,” and another wrote, “Just continue with your friendly, welcoming ways. We always visit you when we are at Maggie. You were the one who treated my kids to whipped cream on top of a gelato. Now they expect it!”

“Good on the business owner, I would of done the exact same thing. He has a duty to make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience. I have kids and when they were little, if they carried on like little brats I would of packed up and left out of the respect for others,” one woman told the Mail.

“They will be stealing cars in Townsville in a few years. Keep off our island,” another contended as someone else sounded off, “Responsible parents should either have taught said children how to behave and show respect for others or remove them from annoying others.”

In the aftermath, Dalloste explained, “Business has been good, the day after it all happened we had double sales.”
