Feinstein fall gives panicked Democrats a scare as they pull a ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ to prop her up

Senate Democrats panicked and continued ongoing damage control as Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) was briefly hospitalized and then released last week after tripping over a chair.

The accident occurred at her home and further proves to what lengths the left will go to prop up the 90-year-old senator no matter what condition she’s in. It appears that Democrats are just praying the oldest sitting senator in Congress holds on long enough to rubberstamp their agenda. She is set to leave office in January 2025.

An announcement from Feinstein’s office asserted that she was admitted and then released from the hospital after only a couple of hours. They contended the admission was a “precaution.”

“Senator Feinstein briefly went to the hospital yesterday afternoon as a precaution after a minor fall in her home,” her spokesperson, Adam Russell, claimed. “All of her scans were clear and she returned home.”

The hospital visit comes after a previous three-month-long hospital stay for shingles and encephalitis. Feinstein has also had bouts where she forgot she had been absent, what Vice President Kamala Harris was doing in the chamber, and that she was only to vote “aye” or “nay” on legislation, instead launching into a speech on it, requiring a staff member to remind her it was simply a vote. All of this is causing serious concern over her physical and cognitive abilities.

“And it comes as Democrats prepare for a key stretch next month headlined by a push to fund the government and — more acutely for Feinstein given her committee work — the Senate Judiciary Committee’s work to advance more judicial nominations and pass a Supreme Court ethics package,” The Hill reported.

“I think she’s been a great colleague for a long time, and I think she’s been very brave about coming in and continuing to work, particularly on the Judiciary Committee,” Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) lamely told reporters on Friday.

Whitehouse went on to justify Feinstein’s continued presence by praising her work and claiming it has kept up “with everybody knowing full well” her being sidelined for various reasons and that gives Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) the “prerogative” to withhold the party’s majority on Judiciary.

And the notion that he wouldn’t do that is fantastical,” he claimed.

Foremost in the minds of Democrats are pending spending bills which will need every vote they can get to pass them.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told reporters that he expects lawmakers will need to pass a continuing resolution to go on funding the government while they work on appropriations bills in the coming months for fiscal 2024. That will necessitate Democrats to appeal to Republicans to secure the requisite 60 votes, even with every Democrat present and voting in favor of the bills.

“Attendance is always going to be important,” a Senate Democratic aide noted, commenting that Feinstein is not the only one to miss votes for significant periods of time. “She needs to be here, but so does everyone else.”

Feinstein hasn’t missed a vote since June 1 but it has become apparent that she is purportedly voting the way she is advised to.

Democrats are also depending on the ailing senator to advance judicial nominations. That issue became a sore point during her absence earlier this year as the party was unable to push forward several partisan nominees before the Judiciary Committee.

“The best thing for Feinstein to do for herself is to step back — the best thing she can do for the country is to keep voting for President Biden’s judges,” Christine Pelosi, the daughter of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), wrote on X in response to a political writer this week who commented on Feinstein’s fall.

“It’s HER choice,” Pelosi, whose mother has been a staunch ally of the senator, raged. “Dianne Feinstein and all Democratic Senators know the stakes. … I respect her agency, her choice, and the judges she’s elevating.”

Adding to the concerns about Feinstein, her daughter, Katherine Feinstein, now has power of attorney over the lawmaker, according to court documents related to her late husband’s estate.
