Felon who violently attacked Vegas judge muzzled with a ‘spit mask’, placed in shackles for sentencing

A Las Vegas judge handed down a sentence to the convicted criminal who launched himself at her in an attack last week in court.

Deobra Redden, 30, stood before Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus on Monday, flanked by officers and restrained with shackles, orange mitts on his hands, and a mesh “spit mask” on his face, as seen in video footage from the sentencing.

Five days after the dramatic courtroom attack, Redden faced the sentence the judge was attempting to deliver last week on a previous charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. Holthus sentenced him to 19 to 48 months in prison but he now faces 13 new charges in connection with the brazen attack that left Holthus and a courtroom marshal with injuries and a trip to the hospital.

“When we were last here, arguments were concluded and the court had begun to pronounce sentence when an incident occurred,” Holthus said in court on Monday.

“An incident initiated by Mr. Redden, preventing the court from completing sentencing,” she added before going ahead with the sentencing which all took about two minutes.

“Any other issues that may arise from the events that occurred last Wednesday will be handled at a future date by a different court,” Holthus said. “For purposes of the record, I want to make it clear that I am not changing or modifying the sentence I was in the process of imposing last week before I was interrupted by defendant’s actions.”

Last week, courtroom video showed the judge denying Redden’s attorney’s request for probation on an attempted battery charge.

“I appreciate that, but I think it’s time that he gets a taste of something else because I just can’t with that history,” Holthus said seconds before Redden was seen leaping over the bench and tackling the judge to the ground as others scrambled to come to her aid and restrain the felon.

“Our whole goal is to maintain the public trust and confidence in the court system and let people know that it is a safe place to be, and this is not going to happen again,” Jerry Wiese II, the court’s chief judge, said last week at a news conference, adding that more security personnel had been requested following the incident.

According to the online records of the Clark County Detention Center, Redden is now additionally charged with coercion with force or a threat of force, extortion, intimidating a public officer with a threat of force, disregarding the safety of a person resulting in significant bodily harm, battery by a probationer or parolee, an unlawful act regarding fluid by a prisoner in confinement, and seven counts of battery on a protected person – that presumably referring to Judge Holthus and the court officials, as The Washington Post reported.

“Redden was jailed on $54,000 bail in connection with the attack but refused to return to court the next day on the new charges, so a judge rescheduled his next appearance in that case for Tuesday,” KSNV reported.

“He’s been violent his entire adult life,” District Attorney Steve Wolfson said, indicating that Redden’s records show prior convictions for three felonies and nine misdemeanors.
