Virtue-signaling in lieu of the real thing left one National Guard recruit considering a drastic end to her career after being forced to shower with men.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley’s term will conclude at the end of September and President Joe Biden has nominated Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. as his successor. During a recent Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds (R) confronted Brown with the woke state of the military with an example of one constituent’s “extremely uncomfortable position” wrought by gender ideology.
Of the anonymous 18-year-old South Dakota National Guard recruit, Rounds detailed that “she was sleeping in open bays and showering with biological males who had not had gender reassignment surgery but were documented as females because they had begun the drug therapy process.”
The situation left her with limited, unfavorable options as the lawmaker suggested she could complain with the fear of retaliation, recycle — disrupting her college start with no guarantee against finding herself in the same situation again or request to resign for religious purposes ending her dream to serve her country.
Speaking with Fox News Digital, Rounds explained how he had become aware of her situation from the state adjutant general who, “had contacted our office very concerned about the information he had received from the recruit. The respect that this young recruit should have received and the privacy that she should have had, she was being deprived of.”
“She could have basically resigned or stepped away. She could have started over again. But nonetheless, it was an extremely uncomfortable position,” the senator expressed. “And I think this is one of the reasons why we’re not meeting our recruitment goals now.”
Previously, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth had attempted to blame the missed recruitment goals of FY22 and expected shortfall for FY23 on the perception of a “woke military” without owning up to how it was impacting members in practice.
“What I am trying to do is talk about now how that drip, drip, drip of criticism about a ‘woke military,’ I do think is having some counterproductive effects on recruiting,” she had told the media.

Rounds was not near so dismissive as he spoke of Biden’s reversal of former President Donald Trump’s ban on transgenderism in the military.
“This seems to be a direct correlation between when the president of the United States issued the executive order making these changes and directing the Department of Defense to integrate…individuals who were transgender and how they should be perceived within the military,” he said.
“Most of the focus is on the transgender individuals, not on the individuals who are working with them,” the congressman asserted.
For his part, despite being in charge of a branch that “proudly recognizes and celebrates generations of LGBTQI+ service members and their contributions,” Brown chose to play ignorant, having not heard of this specific incident prior.
In a statement provided to Fox News Digital, the Pentagon argued, “DoD policy is that all Service members must be treated with dignity and respect. We would encourage any troop who’s feeling uncomfortable or has concerns about privacy in shared spaces to work through their chain of command. Commanders may employ reasonable accommodations to respect the privacy interest of Service members.”
