Democrats may be fending off an identity crisis, but it’s the GOP that a former White House press secretary contends is “in danger” come midterm Election Day.

It’s often been documented that the left in recent years has based its policies on simply opposing whatever it is that President Donald Trump is doing, leaving many — only somewhat jokingly — suspecting a MAGA-developed cure for cancer would see Democrats cheering for the disease.
Despite Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) remaining the main plank of their platform, it was not Democrats but rather Republicans that Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany presented as having “an uphill battle” come November, “and we have to be frank about that.”
During a Monday appearance on “The Five,” the topic of conversation centered around an Axios report that suggested, “Democrats face a post-Trump identity crisis for 2028.” Co-host Harold Ford Jr.’s position that the midterms may not turn out as well for the Democrats as many speculate was used to transition into a direct question from co-host Greg Gutfeld, “Kayleigh, I don’t want to be surprised or blindsided in November. Should we be honest now and say, are we in danger?”
“Yeah, we are,” responded McEnany. “If you look at historical trends, absolutely. The party that’s governing wins choices. It tends to be a referendum on that party, and they lose seats. So, absolutely, it’s an uphill battle, and we have to be frank about that.”
“Here’s where I disagree with Harold: Elections are not referendums; they are choices. And when you look at the polling, when given a choice, Republican, Democrat, this is an NBC poll, Republicans are beating Democrats plus 27 on border security, plus 22 on crime, plus eight on immigration, and it’s even on the economy. So if Republicans can litigate the issues and not the distractions, they end up winning,” she went on before raising a conversation she’d had with former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (I).
“To Joe Manchin’s point, as he told me on Saturday, he said if Democrats want to ever control again or be the majority or have a president who is a Democrat, they have to get with commonality of what’s going on,” expressed McEnany. “You’ve got to listen to guys like [Pennsylvania Sen.] John Fetterman, not guys like [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer. But John Fetterman is dismissed out of hand by party leaders, like James Carville, among others.”
Echoing a position from then-President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina, who’d told Axios, “You can’t win a presidential election on opposition alone,” she further asserted that Trump Derangement Syndrome may appear to work for the midterms, “but TDS cannot be the strategy in 2028. That’s not gonna take you to the promised land.”
As previously reported, the same polling showed the president’s favorability exceeding that of two of the Democrats’ frontrunners as likely candidates in the 2028 presidential primary: former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Trump carried a 41% favorability rating, whereas Harris only had 34%, and Newsom managed 27%.

To McEnany’s point, in a generic ballot, Democrats received 50% support in the NBC News poll, surpassing the 44% support for Republicans.
Turning to the matter of strategy, the former White House press secretary said, “Finally, I would just say, Democrats have to figure out where are they on Medicare for all? The left wing of the party wants that, the mainstream does not. Where are they on Israel? Where are they on government-run grocery stores? They’ve got a lot of divisions to work through. So for all the problems Republicans have-”
Cutting in, Ford stated, “I’m against that. I’m for Israel. We can answer those questions,” before McEnany concluded, “You’re the Fetterman wing. That’s the smarter wing.”
