A report on foreign buyers in the housing market spoke to the dramatic impact being had as Americans are left “waiting in line” behind our nation’s rivals.
“In what world does that make sense?”
Efforts in recent years have sought to combat the growing prevalence of foreign nations gobbling up American acreage hundreds of hectares at a time. However, fewer measures have been taken to safeguard single-home sales, a problem that one report suggests is “pushing Americans out of other U.S. institutions, as well.”
Highlighting her report, “How to Stop Foreign Buyers From Killing the American Dream of Homeownership,” Foundation for Government Accountability senior research fellow Paige Terryberry detailed in a Fox News op-ed, “I show that foreign homebuyers are far more common than most people realize. Between April 2024 and March 2025 alone, foreigners purchased more than 78,000 American homes. And foreign homebuying is becoming more common with every passing year. Between 2024 and 2025 alone, foreign buyers spent 33% more on U.S. homes than they did in the previous year.”

In her latest research, FGA’s @PolicyWithPaige makes the case that lawmakers should prioritize Americans in homeownership policy by taxing foreign buyers.

According to her findings, China was listed among foreign buyers as the largest investor with $13.7 billion in home purchases in 2025, or 15% of the market among international buyers. The communist nation was followed by Canada at $6.2 billion, Mexico at $4.4 billion, and India at $2.2 billion.
Decrying how the largely all-cash offers have “tilted” the market against “younger Americans and middle-class families,” Terryberry made the case that “nearly half of these Chinese buyers intend to use their new home as a way to gain permanent residence in the United States, giving them preferential access to things like a college education for their children.”
“In other words, not only are Chinese citizens crowding Americans out of homes — they’re pushing Americans out of other U.S. institutions, as well,” she contended as she further called out the clear “double standard” from both Canada and China that limits foreign homebuying. “Our citizens are waiting in line behind homebuyers from our country’s top strategic and economic rival. In what world does that make sense?”
Last week, despite some dissension from mostly Republican senators over language regarding a central bank digital currency, the upper chamber passed legislation seemingly aligned with President Donald Trump’s call to curb large institutional investors from the purchase of single-family homes “that could otherwise be purchased by families.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Joseph Edlow has called for changes to the naturalization process that would make passing the test more challenging to ensure Americans aren’t losing out on job opportunities and benefits to foreigners seeking to game the system in their favor.

Boiling down her argument regarding those overseas looking to buy houses in America, Terryberry concluded, “This isn’t a matter of sticking it to foreigners. It’s about standing up for our own citizens. The American Dream is for the American people, and young professionals and middle-class families urgently need it brought within their reach.”
