Former NFL star Richard Sherman popped for second DUI in three years

Former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, the latest legal incident for the troubled Super Bowl winner.

Sherman, whose ball-hawking skills made him a three-time All-Pro for the Seattle Seahawks, was taken into custody by the Washington State Patrol early Saturday morning, according to arrest records. It is unclear what led to his arrest, the second time that he’s been popped for DUI.

The law enforcement agency confirmed the arrest to Fox 13 Seattle which reported that the King County Prosecutor’s Office said that as of Saturday afternoon, it had yet to receive charges for the former local hero.

According to the outlet, “It’s unclear where the arrest was made, but if it was on a state road like I-90 or I-405, his charges would be forwarded to the district court unit.” The WSP also said that the incident was still under investigation.

He was booked at the King County Correctional Facility at 4:51 a.m. on Saturday.

Sherman was previously charged with DUI back in July 2021 for an ugly incident in which he crashed his vehicle into a construction site and left the scene to later attempt to break down the front door of his in-laws’ home with the player being caught in the act on surveillance video.

“Sherman had been belligerent, drinking heavily and had spoken of killing himself when he left his home in Maple Valley the night of July 13, according to police reports. His wife, Ashley Sherman, called 911 to try to have police stop him. He crashed in a construction zone along Highway 520 and then went to his in-laws’ home in Redmond,” according to the Associated Press.

In March 2022, Sherman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges for the incident, copping to first-degree negligent driving, speeding in a roadway construction zone, and second-degree criminal trespass in a deal with King County Prosecutors, the Seattle Times reported at the time.

“I’m grateful for the community we have and the way people continue to accept you even though you’re a flawed human being and made a mistake,” Sherman said in court.

The 35-year-old ex-jock was born in Compton, CA, and would go on to play his college ball at Stanford University before being picked by the Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL draft.

He was the 25th player off the board at the CB position and would go on to outshine them all during his stellar 11-year career during which he was widely recognized as one of the best defensive backs of his era.

As a part of the bruising “Legion of Boom” defense, Sherman was instrumental in leading Seattle to the NFL championship in a 2014 Super Bowl XLVIII 43-8 bludgeoning of Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos in one of the most dominant performances in the history of the big game.

Sherman came up short of another ring in the next year’s Super Bowl thanks to an inexplicable decision by head coach Pete Carroll to not hand the ball to bulldozing running back Marshawn Lynch near the goal line in the closing seconds, instead calling a Russell Wilson pass that was intercepted in the end zone, allowing Tom Brady’s New England Patriots to escape with their fourth title.

He would later move on to the division rival San Francisco 49ers for two seasons where his body succumbed to injuries, closing out his career by joining Brady with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 where he failed to finish out the year after he was injured again.

Sherman has since worked on NFL game analysis and hosts his own podcast.
