President Donald J. Trump finally made his endorsement in the Texas Senate race, endorsing the state’s controversial Attorney General Ken Paxton over longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.
The president’s pick hasn’t gone over well with some GOP senators who have griped to the media, and in a brutal column, the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board went so far as to say that “Trump makes Chuck Schumer’s day by endorsing Ken Paxton” and that he put the normally safe seat “in play” by not endorsing Cornyn.
In the opinion of the WSJ Editorial Board, Trump “will deserve complete and total credit” if Republicans lose the seat and “If Mr. Paxton wins next week and Texas ends up being the seat that turns Senate control to the Democrats, Mr. Trump will deserve ‘complete and total’ credit, as he likes to put it.”
The column came up during a discussion of Trump’s choice on Wednesday’s edition of “Special Report” on Fox News, with the chief political analyst agreeing with the paper that questions about Paxton’s ethics could open the door for the Democrats in the Lone Star state, despite their own candidate, state Rep. James Talarico, having his own issues.

Anchor Bret Baier asked his longtime colleague about the newspaper’s scathing take on Trump’s decision to go with Paxton over Cornyn, “who has been a reliable vote for the Trump agenda across both presidential terms.”
After quoting the WSJ column and rolling a clip of Trump ripping the “vegan” Talarico, Baier went to Hume for his expert analysis on the surprise endorsement.
“The reasons he didn’t get it, I think, are pretty flimsy on the president’s part,” he said. “And I thank that the seat is now in some danger.”
“Look, Texas is still Texas. Ken Paxton may yet win, but he has a ton of baggage,” Hume continued. “There’s no doubt about that, and he doesn’t really bring in all segments of the Republican base, so we’ll see.”
“And Talarico, he’s got some baggage, too, but he’s a slick talker and impresses a lot of people, so he’s got a shot now that maybe he didn’t have if his opponent had been Cornyn.”
In a lengthy Truth Social post announcing the endorsement, Trump cited Paxton’s support for nuking the filibuster to overcome Democrat obstruction of the Save America Act as one reason for his choice.
“I know Ken well, have seen him tested at the highest and most difficult levels, and he is a WINNER! Ken is a Strong Supporter of TERMINATING THE FILIBUSTER and, very importantly, THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, something which polls at 87%, including Dumocrats, and yet can’t seem to get approved,” the president wrote on Tuesday.
Trump’s endorsement didn’t sit well with Cornyn’s fellow Senate RINOs.
“John Cornyn is an outstanding senator and deserved in my judgment the president’s support. Obviously, it’s the president’s call, but I’m disappointed that he did it,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) said, bemoaning the pick.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) was “supremely disappointed” and shook her head about Trump’s motivation. “I don’t understand it,” she whined, according to The Hill.
“Ken Paxton has gone through a lot, in many cases, very unfairly, but he is a Fighter, and knows how to WIN. Our Country needs Fighters, and also Loyalty to the Cause of Greatness,” Trump said in the post on his decision to snub Cornyn, whose recent sucking up was for naught.
