Furious Macron hits back after Trump mocked his wife slap heard round the world

French President Emmanuel Macron is throwing a fit over comments President Donald Trump made about his marriage.

During remarks at the White House, Trump referred to a video clip last year showing an exchange between Macron and his wife as they prepared to get off a plane. The clip, which appeared to show France’s first lady pushing Macron in the face, went viral, and Trump joked about it during an Easter lunch on Wednesday, igniting the ire of the French president, who said the comments were “neither elegant nor up to standard.”

“So I am not going to respond to them – they do not merit a response,” Macron said when asked about Trump’s remarks.

Trump ripped into NATO allies and recounted reaching out to Macron for help with the ongoing conflict with Iran, mimicking a French accent as he spoke with those gathered for the Easter event at the White House.

“Then I call up France, Macron – whose wife treats him extremely badly – he’s still recovering from the right to the jaw,” Trump said, as some of the attendees laughed.

“And I said, Emmanuel, we’d love to have some help in the Gulf, even though we’re setting records on knocking out bad people and knocking out ballistic missiles. We’d love to have some help. If you could, could you please send ships immediately?” he continued.

“‘No, no, no, we cannot do that, Donald. We can do that after the war is won,’” Trump said, relaying what Macron allegedly told him. “I said, no, no, I don’t need after the war is won, Emmanuel.”

“So I learned about NATO – NATO won’t be there if we ever have the big one, you know what I mean by the big one,” Trump added.

Even critics of the French president seemed to come to his defense, criticizing Trump for his jab at Macron’s marriage.

“Honestly, it’s not up to par,” said Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of France’s lower house of parliament, according to The Guardian.

“We are currently discussing the future of the world. Right now in Iran, this is having consequences for the lives of millions of people, people are dying on the battlefield, and we have a president who is laughing, who is mocking others,” she told Franceinfo.

“You are aware of the extent of my disagreements with the president, but for Donald Trump to speak to him like that and to speak of his wife in such a manner – I find that absolutely unacceptable,” Manuel Bompard, coordinator of La France Insoumise, told BFMTV.

“Another controversial outburst from Donald Trump,” the conservative French newspaper Le Figaro said.

Some on social media agreed with the criticisms of Trump’s comments, while others found the humor in the president’s remarks.
