Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s presidential aspirations would end where they first began, on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. On Sunday afternoon, DeSantis announced in a video shared on X that he was suspending his presidential campaign and endorsing former President Donald Trump, who he said was the “clear” choice of most Republican voters.
“If there was anything I could do to produce a favorable outcome, more campaign stops, more interviews, I would do it,” DeSantis said. “But I can’t ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we don’t have a clear path to victory.”
“It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance. They watched his presidency get stymied by relentless resistance, and they see Democrats using lawfare to this day to attack him,” he continued.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

While DeSantis was praised by many for the class and dignity he displayed in stepping out of the GOP presidential primary, there were plenty on the left like California Gov. Gavin Newson who celebrated the news. Gavin, who was soundly thumped by DeSantis in a November debate, tried to be cute when he tweeted: “Fire sale on all Ron DeSantis merch today!”

In backing Trump, DeSantis took care to explain why while pointing out that he has disagreements with the former president. He also took a shot at Nikki Haley.
“While I’ve had disagreements with Donald Trump, such as on the coronavirus pandemic and his elevation of Anthony Fauci, Trump is superior to the current incumbent Joe Biden. That is clear,” he said. “I signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee, and I will honor that pledge.”
“He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents,” DeSantis continued. “The days of putting Americans last, of kowtowing to large corporations, of caving to woke ideology, are over.”
As for Newson, given the current state of affairs in California the Democratic governor probably should have sat this one out because social media users were quick to respond to his needling of DeSantis.
Here’s a quick sampling of the responses, as seen on X:
At least he was man enough to run and take his shot. You cower behind an 80 year old dementia patient.
