Sen. John Fetterman’s wife, Gisele, is facing social media backlash for seemingly ditching her husband in his hour of need.
In a Twitter thread published Friday, she revealed that after her husband checked into a hospital for clinical depression roughly a week ago, she’d packed up her things, grabbed her kids, and embarked on a vacation, sans Fetterman.
Look:
I am not really sure how to navigate this journey but am figuring it out slowly. 1 week ago today when the news dropped, the kids were off from school and media trucks circled our home. I did the first thing I could think of … pack them in the car and drive.

We drove straight into … Canada (and lovely Buffalo NY) (Pro Tip: always have passports ready just in case you have to run away ) We talked about lots of hard things and how we will all have to face hard things. About the need to be gentle … with all and with ourselves. pic.twitter.com/0PWQXHrbqT

We did some scary things but we did them together. We ziplined over Niagara Falls and August got stuck . We talked about flexibility and the need to always have an open heart and an open mind. pic.twitter.com/IyuvBBXaOe

We also talked about how joy and fun can and must still exist, even when someone we love is in pain. And tomorrow? Who knows. Will try all over again. ❤️

The decision to go on vacation while her husband was hospitalized just didn’t compute for many critics.
Take Defense of Freedom Institute spokesperson Angela Morabito.
“She abandoned her husband in the hospital, took her kids to another country, and wants you to believe she’s inspirational,” Morabito tweeted.
“Sen. John Fetterman’s (D-PA) wife brags about abandoning her husband in the hospital and fleeing the country on vacation while he battles severe depression,” Seattle-based conservative radio show host Jason Rantz added.

@giselefetterman I cannot believe that whilst your husband is in hospital recovering you are living it up in Canada at Niagara Falls. Shame on you as you are a disgrace

@giselefetterman did you run away because of the guilt of putting your husband through the election knowing full well he was in no way healthy enough to do it?? You knew this all along so stop the bs!

@giselefetterman is just another Jill Biden pushing her impaired husband into a position he cannot do. The man is in the hospital and she leaves the country on vacation? Definitely not wife if the year. Just another gold digger it seems.

Oh, and by the way, hello to @giselefetterman, a woman who abandoned her husband when he was obviously in dire need of her support. I wonder why her account on Twitter doesn’t allow me to speak to her more directly. I had constructive things to say.

@giselefetterman is so stunningly courageous by turning off replies when she posts about taking vacation while her husband and father of her children is hospitalized.
I’ve CANCELLED vacations when one of my immediate family is hospitalized. We’ve come home early for that.— Willie V (@WillieV73404398) February 25, 2023
One common theme you may have noticed in the responses is the accusation that Gisele had pushed her husband into running for office.
The belief is that she knew her husband wasn’t fit to serve yet pushed him anyway in her own personal search for fame and fortune.
While it’s just a theory, it’s true that she’d played an unusually outsized role in her husband’s election campaign.
Indeed, after Fetterman won the 2022 Pennsylvania Democrat primary election, she delivered his victory speech because he’d been hospitalized at the time after suffering from a stroke.
Watch:
Fetterman eventually recovered enough to return to the campaign trail, but not enough to hide the fact that the stroke really messed him up. This fact became even more evident once he won the general election and assumed his seat.
“At Senator John Fetterman’s desk in the Senate chamber, there is a newly installed monitor that rises or lowers, depending on whether he sits or stands, and provides closed captioning so he can follow the proceedings. At the center dais, a custom desk stand has been built to accommodate the same technology for when he takes his shifts presiding over the Senate,” The New York Times reported earlier this month.
“The sergeant-at-arms has arranged for live audio-to-text transcription for the committees on which Mr. Fetterman serves, and plans to expand the service to all Senate hearings,” the Times added.
Why transcription services? Because the stroke left Fetterman with stark auditory processing issues.
“The most evident disability is a neurological condition that impairs his hearing. Mr. Fetterman suffers from auditory processing issues, forcing him to rely primarily on a tablet to transcribe what is being said to him,” the Times explained.
“The hearing issues are inconsistent; they often get worse when he is in a stressful or unfamiliar situation. When it’s bad, Mr. Fetterman has described it as trying to make out the muffled voice of the teacher in the ‘Peanuts’ cartoon, whose words could never be deciphered,” according to the Times.
And now, of course, he’s suffering from depression as well, raising the question of how someone who’s so out of it can possibly serve the American people …
