An anti-Trump Republican known for his frequent MSNBC appearances got booed at an Iowa GOP event this Thursday after he trash-talked former President Donald Trump.
Speaking at the 2023 Lincoln Dinner, an event hosted in Des Moines by the Republican Party of Iowa, presidential candidate Will Hurd — formerly a House member — couldn’t resist talking about why Trump lost the 2020 election and why he’s allegedly destined to lose the 2024 election if he’s chosen to be the GOP nominee.
Listen:
“The reason Donald Trump lost the election in 2020 is he failed to grow the GOP brand in areas like women with a college degree in the suburbs, black and brown communities, and people under the age of 35. We need leaders who did like your governor, [Kim] Reynolds, who went to places that people didn’t expect. And that’s how y’all turned red,” Hurd said.
“One of the things we need in our elected leaders for them to tell the truth, even if it’s unpopular. Donald Trump is not running for president to make America great again. Donald Trump is not running for president to represent the people that voted for him in 2016 and 2020. Donald Trump is running to stay out of prison,” he added.
By now, several members of the audience were jeering and booing.
“I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. Listen, I know the truth. The truth is hard,” he then said, responding to the jeering. “But if we elect Donald Trump, we are willingly giving Joe Biden four more years in the White House, and America can’t handle that. God bless you, and God bless America.”
As he then walked off stage, a mixture of boos and applause could be heard from the audience.
Hurd later tweeted the video to his followers and urged them to donate to his campaign so that he qualifies to debate Trump.
“I went to Iowa and told the truth. Some folks didn’t like it and some did. If you want to see a leader on the debate stage telling the truth to Trump’s face, give me at least $1 to qualify,” he tweeted.
In response, Trump supporters ratioed him into oblivion:
You should give me $ for having listened to your garbage takes.

So wait, you got boo’d while on the stage and now, you want to get boo’d on Twitter too? Boooo!

You didn’t, and now you can be guaranteed you will not even be considered. Give you $1 for what? Who are you anyway? You’re a joke! You just pulled a Pence. I hope you have a fallback.

I don’t think, judging by the boos, anyone liked it. You didn’t have to go there, but you did. BTW, the indictments came AFTER he announced he was running. You are done. You blew it big time. Waste of 10 minutes.

Wouldn’t it seem obvious that you not coming close to meeting the GOP requirements to even attend the debate still would require you to somehow believe not endorsing the nominee, if Trump, would be agreeable to GOP and the rules? Talk about hurdles, no pun intended.

I very simply do not believe you. You are misguided or corrupt.
What is at stake here is much bigger than just Trump. It is fighting the corruption in our government. Trump clearly understands the urgency of this better than any other candidate.

Over at The Conservative Treehouse, meanwhile, the commentators there accused Hurd of running for office for no other reason than to damage Trump.
“On the surface, Will Hurd is claiming to run for the office of the President under a similar platform to allied former congresswoman Liz Cheney. However, the non-pretending version of the effort is for Will Hurd to damage President Trump as much as needed in order to remove the anti-GOPe policies Trump represents,” they argue.
While that may sound conspiratorial, do keep in mind that Hurd’s Twitter feed looks exactly the same as the feed of the average anti-Trump zealot. Indeed, instead of using it to promote his own candidacy, Hurd’s been using it to relentlessly attack Trump.

Trump’s not just being selfish… he’s endangering the men and women who are putting themselves in harm’s way to allow us to enjoy our freedoms. pic.twitter.com/XGukPiytoa
