GOP governor dumps on his own state’s voters for cheering Trump at CNN town hall

Former President Donald J. Trump’s tour de force performance at CNN’s town hall left his multitude of adversaries fuming after he systematically dismantled moderator Kaitlan Collins, giving the once-respectable cable news network a black eye and raising howls of anger over his mockery of unhinged columnist E. Jean Carroll who accused him of raping her in a department store dressing room in the 1990s.

Many have expressed their disgust with the audience who attended Wednesday’s event at New Hampshire’s Saint Anselm College and cheered Trump on, drawing great enjoyment from his jabs at Carroll over the twisted sexual name that she allegedly gave to her cat as well as suggesting that she might be a racist for referring to her black husband as an ape. And one who expressed his dismay with the crowd was the Granite State’s Republican governor who went on MSNBC and dumped on his own voters.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, a frequent critic of Trump, sat down with former Biden White House spokesperson Jen Psaki – who is now an MSNBC pundit – for an interview that will air Sunday but was teased on Friday morning with an excerpt of the Republican leader castigating his state’s conservative voters in the seats who cheered the former and perhaps future president’s savage skewering of Carroll.

“One of the things that struck me was the laughter in the audience, particularly when Trump was talking about E. Jean Carroll, someone a jury says he’s sexually abused, defamed, and now has to pay her $5 million. Now, you were not involved in making up the audience, but these are people in the audience from New Hampshire, Republicans in New Hampshire, undeclared voters in that room. I was curious just what your reaction was when they started laughing?” Psaki asked.

“It was embarrassing,” Sununu responded.“Now, I can understand as the camera panned through that audience, I knew pretty much everybody in there, they’re all Trump supporters, right?”

“So the audience was absolutely filled with Trump supporters. So I wasn’t surprised to hear the support. But when you’re talking about a serious issue like that and laughter and mocking and all that, that’s it’s completely inappropriate, without a doubt,” he added. “And it doesn’t shine a positive light on New Hampshire. But again, I understand what the audience makeup was.”

Carroll was able to parlay her story into a highly-publicized lawsuit against Trump and, while the New York City jury didn’t find her rape allegation credible, they did arrive at a verdict that he defamed and sexually assaulted her, awarding the flaky 79-year-old with $5 million in damages, a decision that the 2024 GOP frontrunner’s lawyers have appealed. But Trump’s crowd-pleasing ridicule of her struck a particular nerve with the haters.

“Large percentage of Trump supporters?”Psaki asked, almost drooling at the governor’s willingness to trash his own voters.

“Oh, I would say almost all of them. Yeah, I think I have to go back and look. But to Kaitlan’s credit, I think she’d say, this is so-and-so and this person voted for you in 16 and 20 or whatever,” he answered.

“Maybe they’re undeclared voters, but I believe every single one of them had voted for Trump at some point. So I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know who, how they, how they determine that and set that up. But obviously, it was a roomful of Trump supporters. So no one should have been surprised to hear the support. But again, on that issue, it was I would call it embarrassing,” Sununu concluded in the sneak preview of the upcoming full interview.

As the latest heroine of the so-called Resistance, Carroll has joined the lofty heights reserved for the likes of porn actress Stormy Daniels and the parade of women who have accused Trump and other conservatives of sexual misconduct. Her claims will likely be an essential component of the propaganda onslaught that will be unleashed in the coming months.
