The domestic reaction to Israel’s operation to clean terrorists out of Gaza after over 1,300 of its citizens were massacred spurred Republican lawmakers to demand answers about the level of pro-Hamas activity in the U.S.
In a Friday letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, over 30 GOP members of Congress called for the nation’s top law enforcement official to advise on the Justice Department’s response to the rallies in the streets and on college campuses in which sentiment that echoes that of the Islamist organization has been expressed along with blatantly antisemitic rhetoric about Israel.
The group of lawmakers was led by Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.) and is concerned about the potential for anti-Jewish violence as well as terrorism on American soil, a very real concern considering the millions of illegal aliens that have flooded the country since President Joe Biden took office.

“We are writing to express the very disheartening and concerning reports of public rallies in support of Hamas, which is designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the federal government. Since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, our country has seen rallies of support for Hamas, violence directed at Jewish Americans, and anti-Semitic vandalism in cities and college campuses across the nation,” the letter reads.
“This campaign of harassment against Jewish communities and their allies even included a ‘Day of Rage,’ which led to heightened security measures at the U.S. Capitol and cities across the nation. In many cases, law enforcement also increased security around synagogues and schools,” the lawmakers wrote.
“These are alarming incidents. Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of our nation, but coordinated activities supporting Hamas, and intimidating and endangering other citizens have no place in our lawful society. Your department plays a critical role in enforcing the equal application of the law and safeguarding our nation’s security,” the letter continues.
“In that regard, we want to know what steps are being taken by the Department of Justice to investigate Hamas supporters in the United States, as well as the perpetrators of anti-Semitic violence in cities and school campuses across the nation,” the members of Congress demanded.
Noting that Garland has used his office to go after parents who dared to show up at school board meetings in a 2021 memo, the lawmakers note the lack of similar action over the current atmosphere of hostility toward Jews and Israel that is being fomented in the U.S.
“However, since Hamas’s recent attack on Israel, you have not issued a similar memo about the increase of anti-Semitic violence, the threats of intimidation being made against supporters of Israel, or the public rallies being held in support of a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization,” the GOP lawmakers said. “Your inaction in the face of these threats is alarming and requires us to ask the following questions to ensure you are being held accountable to the American people and the Constitution you have sworn to uphold.”
Among the questions posed to Garland is “What is the Department of Justice’s current assessment of the situation regarding pro-Hamas groups in the United States? Has the Department of Justice identified leaders of these organizations and is it investigating whether these individuals are coordinating or communicating with members of Hamas?”
“Are there any ongoing investigations or legal actions against individuals or groups who have publicly stated at pro-Hamas rallies this that they seek the death of their fellow citizens and classmates?” the lawmakers asked, also, “Are federal law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, coordinating with local and state law enforcement to monitor and address potential threats associated with pro-Hamas rallies?”
Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray have been focused on the threat represented by phantom “white supremacists,” aka Trump supporters, who have been pursued and persecuted with terrifying zealousness whereas actual threats seem to have drawn scant attention.
