Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) warned that this “moment of national danger” should fuel lawmakers in Congress to ditch the filibuster.
Speaking with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Johnson asserted the importance of getting the Department of Homeland Security funded, especially in the wake of an alleged third assassination attempt on President Donald Trump as he attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.
“We need to hold a vote right away on Monday or Tuesday to take up the House bill that fully funds DHS,” Johnson said. “All we need is seven Democrats. Seven Democrats at this moment to fund all of DHS in a moment of national risk.”
After this moment of national danger, the Senate needs to come together and fully fund @DHSgov. We need 7 Senate Democrats to step up to the plate.

“I’ve been pretty public about agreeing with President Trump, we need to end that filibuster. This gridlock, this obnoxious obstruction by the Democrats, cannot go on,” the Wisconsin Republican contended.
“Is this going to be the incident that gets your colleagues on the left to actually come along and and and help you fund DHS? Do you think this accelerates for this upcoming week?” Bartiromo asked.
“It certainly should,” Johnson replied. “So many of the Senate Democrats ran as moderates. Now, are they really? Let’s have those seven Democrat moderates. I know John Fetterman will step up to the plate. Where are the other six that’ll step up to the plate in this moment of national danger?”
If Democrats refuse to fund @DHSgov, it’s time to rip the Band-Aid off and eliminate the filibuster for good — there’s not much left of it anyway.

“Now, John Thune likes to say take this whole idea of removing the filibuster off the table, it’s not happening, there’s not enough support from Republicans there. You think this is a moment in time that you actually could remove the filibuster to get funding done?” Bartiromo asked. “Because we are in the middle of a war, after all.”
Johnson called out the “obnoxious” behavior of Congressional Democrats and said it is time to “rip the Band-Aid off” and get rid of the filibuster.
“It’s a legitimate point of view, wanting to maintain the filibuster to — if we’re in the minority — block awful socialist, leftist legislation,” he said.
“But the Senate’s already broken enough… from my standpoint, rip the Band-Aid off. The Democrats will do it. The Democrats will do it when they get the majority,” Johnson predicted. “At a moment of national danger, if Democrats refuse to fund DHS, I would say this would be the time to nuke the filibuster for good.”
