Gov. Kristi Noem punches back at Ben & Jerry’s over call to give back Mount Rushmore

Left-wing extremists who hate America pounced on the 4th of July to criticize a nation whose “very existence has brought more freedom, more hope, more equality and more prosperity to more people from more places over more centuries than any nation in human history,” as former Americans for Prosperity president Tim Phillips aptly stated while paying homage to Independence Day.

To the surprise of few, the liberal ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s led the way with this tweet: “This 4th of July, it’s high time we recognize that the US exists on stolen Indigenous land and commit to returning it.”

Ben & Jerry’s also besmirched Mount Rushmore and the American presidents depicted in stone — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln — which drew a sharp rebuke from South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R).

“But what is the meaning of Independence Day for those whose land this country stole, those who were murdered and forced with brutal violence onto reservations, those who were pushed from their holy places and denied their freedom?” the company said on its website. “The faces on Mount Rushmore are the faces of men who actively worked to destroy Indigenous cultures and ways of life, to deny Indigenous people their basic rights.”

Appearing on “Fox & Friends,” Noem declared. “I’m not going to listen to a bunch of liberal Vermont businessmen who think they know everything about this country and haven’t studied our history.”

“Right now, Mount Rushmore is the greatest symbol of our freedom and history of the United States of America,” she said. “We can learn from the men on that mountain. We can do better. But, boy, they led us through some challenging times. And I think Americans in this country need some inspiration, and we can gain it from a monument like that. We should be proud of America and knock off what Ben & Jerry’s is doing. They don’t have any idea what they’re doing.”

The Supreme Court ruled in 1980 that the land that Mount Rushmore was on was stolen after gold was discovered, awarding $105 million in damages to the Sioux tribes who refused payment understanding the land had far greater value. The left is consistent in seizing on the darker moments of U.S. history while ignoring the greater good and sacrifice seen from America over the years.
