Greenland PM responds to Trump take over bid with candid 6-word message

Greenland’s prime minister left no doubt about his feelings on President-elect Donald Trump’s repeated comments about acquiring the Arctic territory.

While Prime Minister Mute Egede has called for Greenland to be independent from Denmark, he bluntly told Fox News that its people “don’t want to be Americans.”

“You’ve heard the statements from the president-elect. What do you make of all of that?” anchor Bret Baier asked in an interview Thursday.

“We will always be part of NATO. We will always be a strong partner for the U.S. We are close neighbors,” Egede replied.

“We have been cooperating in the last 80 years, and I think the future have a lot to offer to cooperate with, but we want to also be clear,” he continued. “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be a part of U.S., but we want a strong cooperation together with U.S.”

“If you had a vote, a referendum, to have independence from Denmark, would the residents of Greenland vote for that?” Baier asked.

“Yeah, but it’s up to the Greenlandic people to decide when we want to be independent, and I think it’s important to see that if Greenland takes those steps, we will always be a part of the Western alliance and a strong partner for U.S. because your security is our security,” the prime minister responded.

In a Truth Social post last month, Trump stated that “for purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World” it was an “absolute necessity” for the U.S. to have “ownership and control” of Greenland.

“Well, we need Greenland for national security purposes,” Trump said at a press conference earlier this month.

“I’ve been told that for a long time, long before I even ran. I mean, people have been talking about it for a long time. You have approximately 45,000 people there. People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it,” he added.

“President Trump, as you know, can be persuasive,” Baier said in his interview with Egede. “Are you saying tonight that Greenland is not for sale?”

“Greenland and the future of Greenland will be decided by the Greenlandic people, and the Greenlandic people don’t want to be Danes, the Greenlandic people don’t want to be Americans. Greenlandic people want to be part of the Western alliance as Greenlandic people,” the prime minister replied.
