‘Gross irresponsibility’: Left-leaning media slams Republican response to Mar-A-Lago raid

Liberal media figures attacked conservatives who criticized the Monday raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with one columnist claiming the outrage was a “reckless response.”

“I would like nothing more than to be wrong about this,” Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank said in a post that linked to an op-ed in the paper on Twitter, “But the reckless response by the GOP-Fox News axis to the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago makes it feel as though we’re falling into the abyss.”

Other media figures joined in the conversation, with MSNBC host Joe Scarborough labeling critics of the raid of former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate as “conspiracy theorists,” “insurrectionists,” “weirdos,” “freaks” and “fascists” Thursday morning.

CNN political analyst Ron Brownstein also attacked critics of the raid, calling the outrage a “scary and revealing moment” on Twitter. One critic he attacked was Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.

“It’s hard to imagine there was a day-maybe it was more like an hour, or even a single debate exchange- when Rubio thought he had the backbone to stand up to Donald Trump,” Brownstein posted on Twitter in response to comments Rubio made on Fox News.

MSNBC’s John Heilemann, who was guest-hosting “Deadline,” claimed Trump publicized the raid to “spur these conspiracy theories, but then to put pressure on the DoJ.”

“I know we have become inured to this Orwellian stuff but are we just supposed to move on from the fact that this network spent day after day, just a few weeks ago, screaming about the need to protect judges and their homes but are now airing stuff like this night after night,” MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan tweeted in response to a clip from Fox News host Jesse Watters.

CNN White House Correspondent John Harwood posted a link to a Washington Post editorial that attacked critics of the raid.

“Republicans are behaving with gross irresponsibility: from talk show hosts urging violence that seems all-too-possible after the events of Jan. 6, 2021, to Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and former Trump strategist Stephen K. Bannon comparing the FBI to the Gestapo, to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) declaring the Justice Department in ‘an intolerable state of weaponized politicization,’ the editorial published Wednesday afternoon said.

Former President Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
