Hakeem Jeffries denies claim that he thinks Mamdani will ruin Democrat chances of taking back the House

A disputed claim alleges that House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries “strongly believes” that the NYC mayoral election could ruin the party’s chances of taking back the House.

According to Mark Halperin, “people who’ve spoken directly with the leader” have indicated Jeffries has a strong belief “that if [Zohran] Mamdani wins, he [Jeffries] can’t win the majority.” Mamdani has largely enjoyed the support of fringe, progressive Democrats who identify with his socialist ideology, but the leadership of the party has not issued a full-throated endorsement of his candidacy. This comes as the left is attempting to find its political identity following the blowout election of President Donald Trump in 2024, so it’s no wonder the party isn’t willing to hitch its wagon to such a controversial figure.

But Christiana Stephenson, a spokeswoman for the Democrat leader, says these claims are “patently false.”
