Hawley grills Mayorkas over DHS agents being pulled off cases to make sandwiches for illegals

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) boss Alejandro Mayorkas was grilled by lawmakers over his failure to control the southern border with Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) questioning him about his agency’s priorities.

On Tuesday, the embattled bureaucrat was put on the spot by the Missouri Republican who demanded answers about allegations that DHS agents were pulled from important cases involving drug and human trafficking and assigned to perform menial tasks in the service of illegal aliens.

During the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, Hawley confronted the Biden regime apparatchik over information from a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) whistleblower who said that hundreds of agents had been taken off important cases and sent to the border to deal with the migrant crisis with some being assigned to make sandwiches for the new arrivals.

“Are there HSI special agents who are currently at the border, having been pulled away?” Hawley asked.

Mayorkas responded, “Combatting the fight against fentanyl, yes,” telling the GOP senator that he’d be “pleased” to provide him with the information after being pressed for the number.

“That’s not what the special agent is alleging. That’s not what she said,” Hawley shot back. “She said that they were being taken off of fentanyl interdiction, taken off child exploitation cases, off of their other investigations into criminals to make sandwiches. That’s her quote. You’re saying that this is a lie? That she’s wrong?”

The slippery DHS boss tried to duck giving a direct answer, saying that there are “a number of law enforcement priorities,” prompting Hawley to shoot back, “Is making sandwiches one of them?”

“Of course not, senator. We accomplish a tremendous amount…,” Mayorkas said, continuing to avoid answering the question as Hawley pressed on whether the whistleblower is wrong.

Making sandwiches for illegal immigrants? Is she wrong?” Hawley persisted. “This is one of your agents. Is she wrong? She says that there are 600, at least, special agents pulled off of other cases, sent down to the border to babysit illegal immigrants. Is she wrong?”

Mayorkas again evaded the question, blabbering on that DHS employees are utilized “to achieve the maximum law enforcement objective possible. That is what we do.”

“So you’re not going to deny it?” Hawley asked, to which the DHS chieftain replied, “I’m incredibly proud of what our people do every single day,” not answering the question nor denying it.

“We are being told to shut down investigations to go hand out sandwiches and escort migrants to the shower and sit with them while they’re in the hospital and those types of tasks,” the whistleblower, who was identified as a special said, according to the Washington Times.

During an appearance on Fox News, Hawley told host Sean Hannity that Mayorkas should be impeached.

“When you systematically mislead the American people and lie, as you said, lie and lie to Congress and the American people, you are not doing your job and should be removed,” he said.
