High School prank ends with dead teacher, 5 student arrests

A simple high school prank ended in the tragic death of a beloved Georgia teacher following a warning from the school district.

The annual “Junior/Senior Wars” at Hall County School District is a tradition for the high schools and a great way for students to make lasting memories with their peers and teachers as they approach the end of their general education. The district took to Facebook on Thursday night to remind the students not to go “too far” with their pranks, some of which have previously caused “damage to property.”

“In previous years, some pranks during prom season–sometimes referred to as Junior/Senior Wars– have gone too far, resulting in damage to property. We urge all students to refrain from participating in any activities that may cause harm or destruction to school or personal property. Such actions not only reflect poorly on the individual involved but also tarnish the reputation of our schools, families, and community,” the district warned. “It’s essential to recognize the serious consequences that can arise from engaging in destructive behavior. Damaging property can lead to criminal charges, not to mention the potential repercussions on your participation in graduation ceremonies and other special events planned for this time of year. We cannot stress enough the importance of making responsible choices and thinking about the long-term impact of your actions.”

This warning now has an eerie ring to it following the death of 40-year-old North Hall math teacher Jason Hughes.

The educator was at home Thursday evening when he noticed five of the students throwing toilet paper at the trees in his yard. He left his house to approach the students, who fled to their vehicles. Due to recent rain, Hughes reportedly slipped and fell into the road, where he was allegedly fatally struck by 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace. He and two others stopped to render aid to the teacher until first responders were able to arrive, and Hughes was rushed to the hospital, where he would unfortunately succumb to his injuries.

All five of the students, including Wallace, Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz, have been arrested and are being charged in connection with the incident. Wallace is being charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering on private property. According to recent reports, the family of the teacher is supporting dropping the charges against the students.

It is believed that the students were pranking the teacher because they would get “two points” if they did so, but being caught by said teacher would result in a point deduction, which may explain why they attempted to flee the home.
