Political wars over manufactured gender issues continue to make life needlessly complicated for America’s youth.
A Texas student sued her high school for canceling its production of “Little Shop of Horrors,” where she was set to play the male lead.
Ana Mota, who was cast as Seymour, sued the Grand Prairie Independent School District (GPISD), arguing the cancellation amounted to illegal gender discrimination, The Hill reported.
The controversy stems from Texas Senate Bill 12 passed in 2025 that “restricts diversity, equity and inclusion programs, instruction and programming involving sexual orientation or gender identity, and school employees’ assistance with a student’s ‘social transitioning,'” NBC 5 reported.
Mota is suing over the school district’s interpretation of the bill, arguing it violated protections under Title IX.
“GPISD intentionally excluded Ana from the role of Seymour and denied her the benefits of participation in the GPISD educational theater program because she is female. The administrators who removed Ana from the role stated explicitly that the basis for removal was that Ana is a female student portraying a male character,” the lawsuit reads, according to the Hill.
Mota may have a case, Attorney David Coale indicated when he told NBC 5 that parts of Senate Bill 12 leave “a little bit of a gray area. There’s some very specific items in SB 12 that aren’t really that hard to figure out. There are others that are pretty vague,” he added.
In a local news piece, Mota said that the auditions were “gender blind” and that no one auditioned for specific parts. “The director just chose which actors would be best for each role for the betterment of the show,” she said.
“This isn’t about drag at all.”
High school cancels all performances of musical—after girl cast as male lead.
Blames Texas law banning “sexually oriented performances” where minors might be present.
“I was upset,” she said. “This isn’t about drag at all.”
Little Shop of Horrors is about flower shop assistant who accidentally grows a human eating plant.
“Auditions were gender blind and we didn’t audition for any specific part,” she explained.
“The director just chose which actors would be best for each role for the betterment of the show.”
Now there be no fall show at all.
Incident occurred at South Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, Texas.
