Historic NYC restaurants close as famous hotel is turned into migrant shelter

Famed New York City restaurateur and Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer is shuttering two eateries after the historic Manhattan hotel where they are located was converted into a migrant shelter.

The restaurants Marta and Maialino, which are both in the lobby of the Redbury Hotel, will be serving their last meals on August 25, a major disappointment to diners who have flocked to the locations for years.

The Union Square Hospitality Group which is run by Meyer confirmed that the pair of restaurants at the 120-year-old landmark will be closing down.

“We are disappointed to announce that Marta and Maialino (vicino) will be ceasing operations at the Redbury. Our last night of service will be Friday, August 25,” the USHG said in a statement.

“As tenants of the Redbury, our two restaurants, which occupy the lobby floor, have been eagerly anticipating the hotel’s full post-pandemic reopening. Now, as the Redbury partners with the City to house asylum seekers, it’s become clear that the timeline for that reopening has been extended indefinitely,” the statement reads. “While we admire and respect the Redbury’s decision, the viability of our business relies significantly on hotel-related F&B operations, including event venues and the lobby bar, spaces that are now unavailable for our use.”

The historic locale, previously known as the Martha Washington Hotel, is one of the swanky hotels that is being used to house the new arrivals who have come to the sanctuary city by the thousands, overwhelming the ability of the Big Apple to put them up in traditional shelters.

One of the soon-to-be-closed locations, the Roman-style pizza eatery Marta, which is Italian for Martha, states on its website: “On August 25th, Marta will close its doors at The Redbury Hotel. We’re beyond grateful to our neighborhood regulars, visitors, and guests who have made this such a special 9 years. We’ll be seeing you again soon.”

“On August 25th, Maialino will close its doors at The Redbury Hotel. We’re enormously grateful to our community and loyal guests who have dined with us and made this an experience unlike any other. We’ll be seeing you again soon,” Maialino notified customers on the restaurant’s website.

A representative of the hospitality group told the New York Post that it is “actively looking to find new locations for both restaurants, as well as job placements for all employees impacted by the closures.”

“We’re all eligible to leave or go to another restaurant that our restaurant group owns,” a waiter at Marta told the outlet.

The ongoing flood of migrants into Gotham has Mayor Eric Adams in panic mode and he recently complained to “CBS Mornings” that the bordering states have created a “funnel” for the illegal aliens who are overrunning his city.

“We remain fully supportive of the Redbury’s initiative and will continue advocating for policy change that expedites work permits for asylum seekers,” the Union Square Hospitality Group said in its statement.
