House Intelligence Committee Democrats are demanding to know why security clearances were revoked for 37 officials.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard made the move last month, resulting in a number of “current and former intelligence officials who have ties to the Biden administration or have spoken out against Trump policies” having their clearances stripped, according to The Hill. She accused those in the group of “committing intentional egregious violations of tradecraft standards,” but this explanation isn’t satisfying Intel Committee Democrats.
Things are starting to heat up.

“If there is evidence of misconduct to warrant revoking the clearances of these 37 individuals, some of whom were senior IC officers at the time of your memo, it would indicate a systemic issue in the granting of security clearances. It is hard to imagine an issue more deserving of congressional oversight and corrective action,” wrote Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) in a letter to Gabbard. “If, however, these revocations occurred outside of established process and don’t reflect fundamental risk, an immense amount of IC knowledge and capability has been lost.”
The letter also revealed that at least one of those who lost their clearances was “serving undercover at the time of the announcement,” leading the Democrats to ask why the office would make a public announcement. However, The Hill reports that a ” source familiar with the Office of Director of National Intelligence said agencies were consulted and disputed that one of the officials whose clearance was revoked was actively undercover.”
“At least two of the individuals listed in the memo are currently employed as congressional staff, raising serious separation of powers concerns,” Himes added in the letter, which was signed by all of the Democratic panel members.
In August, Gabbard made it clear that she has no patience for those in the intel community who “betray their oath.”
“Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right. Those in the Intelligence Community who betray their oath to the Constitution and put their own interests ahead of the interests of the American people have broken the sacred trust they promised to uphold,” she declared. “In doing so, they undermine our national security, the safety and security of the American people, and the foundational principles of our democratic republic.”
