ICE-assaulting Rep says it’s ‘absurd’ that she has to follow the same laws as regular Americans

Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver has no regrets even after being charged with assaulting federal officers at a New Jersey immigrant detention facility.

Not only does the New Jersey Democrat think her actions were the result of a situation “escalated by ICE,” but she thinks it’s “absurd” that she is being charged at all.

“Well, I think one – this is political intimidation from the Trump administration,” she said in an MSNBC interview.

“Me being charged is absurd, you know, especially when I’m just there to do my job,” she contended.

“The confusion and the chaos that you see was caused by ICE officials and Homeland Security,” she continued.

“They created this unnecessary situation by arresting the mayor,” McIver said, adding that the federal officials created an “unsafe environment” for “peaceful protesters” and the members of Congress who claimed they were exercising their oversight duties in demanding to enter the facility.

The Justice Department alleged that McIver “slammed her forearm into the body of a uniformed HSI agent and reached out and tried to restrain the agent by forcibly grabbing him.”

The Democrat was also accused of having “pushed an ICE officer and used her forearms to forcibly strike the agent.”

McIver made her first court appearance Wednesday, appearing virtually before a United States Magistrate Judge for the District of New Jersey, and was told she would not be allowed to travel outside of the U.S. as she awaits a preliminary hearing next month.

In an appearance on CNN Tuesday, McIver made the same argument about the “absurd” charges against her.

“I think the charges are absurd. You know, it’s ridiculous. I was there to do my job along with my other colleagues. We have done this before. This is our obligation to do. It’s in our job description to have oversight over a facility. And the entire situation was escalated by ICE,” she said.

The Democrat found little sympathy on social media.
