Israel-bashing reporter ‘taken off of reporting duties’ while AP investigates

The Associated Press’ primary Gaza reporter has been suspended over his history of calling Israel an “apartheid” regime that should be “overthrown.”

An investigation by HonestReporting, a media watchdog, found that reporter Issam Adwan’s X (Twitter) feed is brimming with antisemitic content. It comes as little surprise given his past work for Al Jazeera English and for “anti-Israeli non-governmental organizations.”

It also comes as no surprise given his open advocacy for Gaza:

A recent hire who started his latest gig at the AP in August, Adwan posted anti-Israel tweets as recently as October of 2022.

“The Palestinian revolt against the Israeli oppression will be a triumph sooner rather than later. No matter how strong or well-supported by the other tyrants, every colonial system will be overthrown. Meanwhile, you should reflect on what you did to contribute to it,” he tweeted on Oct. 13th, 2022.

Prior to this, he reportedly posted a tweet on the 12th comparing Israel to the Nazi regime.

“It is ironic, in my opinion, that Germany is bargaining the Palestinian blood to pay for their past crimes, therefore building another racist regime that is so similar to the Nazis. A cycle of hypocrisy and nonsense,” he wrote.

Both tweets have since been deleted.

Regarding the latter tweet, HonestReporting notes that he “made this comparison as a repost supporting none other than Hosam Salem – a former New York Times photographer who was fired after HonestReporting exposed him glorifying a gruesome Palestinian terror attack and calling to ‘Smite the Necks of Unbelievers.'”

Days after posting these two tweets, Adwan doubled down on his antisemitism by retweeting a tweet from the antisemitic BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement accusing Israel of “poisoning wells,” which HonestReporting notes is an antisemitic trope “which goes back to medieval blood libels against the Jews.”

In an additional tweet posted on Nov. 26, 2022, Adwan accused Israel of perpetrating “colonialism” and “apartheid.”

“It’s simple to identify which side you take. Take a look at the reactions. Supporting colonialism and apartheid is never ok to the human common sense,” he reportedly wrote.

But it gets worse. In a tweet posted a year earlier in 2021, he defended Hamas, the terrorist group that just butchered hundreds of Israeli men, women, and children.

“LET’S BE CRYSTAL CLEAR. DON’T ASK ME ABOUT THE ROCKETS OF HAMAS.. DON’T ASK ME ABOUT ‘VIOLENT’ PROTESTS AROUND PALESTINE. WE HAVE BEEN IN THIS GENOCIDE FOR 73 YEARS…. 73 YEARS OF NIGHTMARES. ASK ME ABOUT CHILD’S SLAUGHTER. STOP BEING IGNORANT FOR ONCE,”  he wrote, according to Fox News.

Then in a tweet posted two years earlier in 2019, he defended Islamic terrorists. He posted the tweet in defense of terrorism after an Israeli man posted a tweet asking why people were complaining about a terrorist being killed.

“Please explain me how killing a terrorist, a leader in the Islamic jihad, who was responsible for the units who launched rockets, is against peace. If this is the kind of people you are about than [SIC] I don’t wanna sign any agreement with you,” the Israeli wrote.

“The resistance parties and movements are found when the injustice happened like any other country,” Adwan wrote back in response. “The Israeli government is lying. It’s not a Jewish issue in Palestine. It’s just an ethnic cleansing for decades that obligates a resistance against.”

As a result of HonestReporting’s investigation, Adwan has been suspended.

“Issam Adwan was taken off of reporting duties a few days ago while we look into this,” an AP spokesperson told Fox News.

Fox News notes that Adwan’s recent AP stories have all focused on the civilian casualties from Israeli’s retaliatory bombings.

“Israel accuses Hamas of endangering Gaza’s civilian population by placing weapons and missile launchers in densely populated areas. It also accuses them of using civilians as human shields,” he wrote for the AP as recently as Wednesday. “But the military long has carried out airstrikes in crowded residential neighborhoods, inevitably harming civilians and civilian infrastructure.”

While it’s unclear how the AP will ultimately handle Adwan’s pro-Palestinian bias, the paper’s history suggests it might fire him.

“This isn’t the first time the AP has tapped someone with a history of bashing Israel for a news position. In 2021, the AP hired and then fired a recent Stanford graduate as a news associate, after her history of anti-Israel social media posts came to light,” according to Fox News.
