‘It’s extortion’: Former federal prosecutor accuses ‘obstructionists’ in DOJ of trying to flip Trump ally

A former federal prosecutor slammed the Justice Department for “extortion” over alleged efforts to influence the attorney of former President Donald Trump’s co-defendant along with other “shenanigans.”

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, the former chief of the DOJ’s organized crime unit James Trusty weighed in on the legal battles of Trump with a nod to the Hunter Biden investigation as well. Mark Levin, host of “Life, Liberty & Levin,” prompted the attorney to opine on “anything else weird” he had seen on top of denying privileges to the president.

Before delving into the concerning allegations against federal prosecutor Jay Bratt, Trusty reminded Levin about how Assistant United States Attorney Lesley Wolf had alerted Biden’s lawyers about where investigators intended to search, “In my book, that’s basically obstruction of justice.”

He used that point to emphasize the parallels that “speak volumes” on Attorney General Merrick Garland’s integrity. Based on court filings, Trusty noted how Bratt, once in charge of the counterintelligence and export-control section for the Justice Department’s National Security Division, had weaponized an application filed by the attorney of Walt Nauta in the Trump classified documents case.

“You had the high-level DOJ official — according to a statement submitted as an officer-to-the-court, to a federal judge — told Stanley Woodward, a defense attorney representing Walt Nauta that it would be a shame, essentially, if he endangered his pending judgeship by not flipping Nauta against President Trump,” the former prosecutor explained. “Again, it’s extortion.”

“So the people that we are entrusting in our criminal justice system to fairly and impartially and transparently pursue justice are actually obstructionists because they’re so hellbent on going after one target: President Trump,” slammed Trusty.

As previously reported, in addition to tipping off investigators, Wolf had also allegedly threatened IRS whistleblowers against interviewing President Joe Biden’s grandchildren, warning they’d be in “hot water” if they tried.

Trusty went on to assert, “There’s evidence from both of those cases that suggests this Department of Justice, if those accusations are right, has no compunction about breaking the rules, about destroying the rule of law because of their political interest in being the ones that got President Trump.”

These details were only part of the “shenanigans” attributed to special counsel Jack Smith’s indictments of Trump. As Levin put it, “He pierces attorney-client privilege by hook-or-by-crook, gets it in front of the grand jury. It’s used in front of the grand jury. And now, in this case, he’s moved it to another grand jury. And so the grand jury in Florida and the judge in Florida don’t know anything about it unless Trump’s lawyers are good enough to raise it with them.”

On Monday, Judge Aileen Cannon in presiding over the documents case challenged Smith on the out-of-state grand jury matter and wrote in a filing, “The Special Counsel states in conclusory terms that the supplement should be sealed from public view ‘to comport with grand jury secrecy,’ but the motion for leave and the supplement plainly fail to satisfy the burden of establishing a sufficient legal or factual basis to warrant sealing the motion and supplement.”

Furthermore, after striking two sealed entries from the docket, she gave Smith until Aug. 22 to address his use of a Washington, D.C. grand jury for a Florida indictment, “The response shall address the legal propriety of using an out-of-district grand jury proceeding to continue to investigate and/or to seek post-indictment hearings on matters pertinent to the instant indicted matter in this district.”

Speaking to the gravity of attempting to flip Nauta, George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley had previously stated in a column, “If he were to flip…Trump would face a potentially insurmountable case.”
