Another potential addition to the field of 2024 GOP presidential hopeful took a passing shot on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis after CNN’s Jake Tapper teed up a question on qualifications courtesy of disgraced former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).

Having already established her hack bona fides through the sham Jan. 6 committee, only to get censured and removed from office via primary, Cheney’s corporate media-friendly opinions offered ready to use as a foil for another middling Republican, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu.
After speculating that the primary field could grow to include 12 candidates, though he did not name names, Sununu was asked by CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” to add his opinion to the former congresswoman’s suggestion that, “Any candidate who says they will pardon Jan. 6 defendants is not qualified to be President.”
“Governor DeSantis said that on day one as president he would consider pardoning people convicted of crimes related to Jan. 6, potentially, even former President Trump,” Tapper said before referencing Cheney’s tweet. “Do you agree that that’s disqualifying?”
“No, it’s not disqualifying,” Sununu began before twisting his answer into a jab at both the governor and president. “Nothing I would do, of course, but not disqualifying. Look, I think in this day and age, there’s nothing disqualifying for any candidate, unfortunately.”
Rather than considering the actual facts around Jan. 6, both guest and host maintained the framing that everyone who had been at the Capitol when it was breached was somehow a criminal. In reality, DeSantis’ statement when appearing on “The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show” presented a measured approach to exonerating those who may have been railroaded by a politically motivated process.
“The DOJ and FBI have been weaponized. We see that. We see it in a variety of contexts, some of which you mentioned,” America’s Governor explained. “And so what I’m going to do is — I’m going to do on day one — I will have folks that will get together and look at all these cases, who are people who are victims of weaponization or political targeting, and we will be aggressive at issuing pardons.”

“But it will be done on a case-by-case basis,” he added, “because I think you’ve got to make sure that… There’s a whole bunch of cases that don’t necessarily get headlines, but if people are being treated just because they don’t get on TV or something, they’re being treated disfavorably. They need to have a fair hearing as well.”
Sununu, who teased a decision on his own position in the 2024 race “in the next week or two,” had more directly attacked the president, as he accused Trump of “playing this victim card.”
“The media, the DA (Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg) in New York, all of these things have kind of worked in his favor very much. Just the fact that we’re talking about Donald Trump as a victim — that’s unique in itself, but that isn’t lasting, necessarily. That doesn’t mean that the support that he has today turns into a vote nine months from now,” the New Hampshire governor said of polling bumps seen after Trump’s April indictment.
While he also opined that excess candidates should leave the race by November or December, allowing for the top two or three to duke it out in the primary, Sununu expressed, “It’s bizarre how single issues don’t drive and don’t cancel out any candidate anymore. But ultimately, the candidates still have to live on their merits.”
