JD Vance talks online rumors, insists marriage with Usha ‘as strong as it’s ever been’

Online rumors were deemed something they “get a kick out of” as Vice President J.D. Vance was given the opportunity to sound off on the state of his marriage.

The notion that President Donald Trump’s legacy may carry on in the White House beyond 2028 with a successor certainly has the left strategizing to derail the Trump train, including getting the ball rolling on finding a line of attack for the vice president. In recent weeks, this has notably included gossipy allegations of trouble for his marriage to second lady Usha Vance, which he says is “as strong as it’s ever been.”

On top of dealing with raising three young children on the national stage, the Vances have been the focus of rumors after the vice president’s hug of widow Erika Kirk was deemed too friendly by detractors, and the second lady had one day been seen in public after forgetting to wear her wedding ring.

When asked whether he was frustrated by headlines about their relationship during an interview with NBC News, Vance expressed, “I think that we kind of get a kick out of it.”

“With anything in life, you take the good with the bad,” he remarked. “You accept that there are some sacrifices and there are some very good things that come along with it, too. But our marriage is as strong as it’s ever been, and I think Usha’s really taken to it, and it’s been kind of cool to see how she’s developed and evolved in this new role.”

As had been reported, former MSNBC host Joy Reid had been among those speculating that Vance’s marriage could be on the rocks when she’d contended on the “I’ve Had It” podcast that voters wouldn’t support him if he remained married to a woman of Indian heritage.

“So, they can’t have the successor to MAGA be the guy with the brown, Hindu wife. They’re also Christian nationalists,” Reid claimed of conservatives before later suggesting the vice president would leave his wife for Kirk. “That ain’t gonna work. That’s why he’s throwin’ his wife under the bus. Poor Usha — or she’s in on it, right? And she’s wicked too?”

Much of the hubbub had involved the second lady appearing at Camp Lejeune with first lady Melania Trump having forgotten her wedding ring, to which a spokesperson had explained she is “a mother of three young children, who does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes.”

“It’s funny. I actually don’t think that it’s tough,” Vance said of the stories, adding on the occasion of her forgetting her rings, “She was like, ‘Oh, if I don’t go back and get them, there’s going to be some ridiculous psycho who talks about it on social media.’ And I was like, let them. It’s not even worth the trip to run back upstairs. So we actually have a little bit of fun with it. And we thought that whole viral social media cycle was kind of funny.”

“There are certainly ways in which it’s difficult on the family. I’m not going to pretend that it isn’t. But it’s the sacrifice that we signed up for,” said the vice president who’d gone as far as to dress as a meme of himself for Halloween.

Where living in the public spotlight concerned his kids, Vance expressed, “I think that there’s always a limelight on the kids, and that’s both good and bad.”

He suggested his eight-year-old is not a fan of the cameras, while his five-year-old “probably likes [the attention] too much. He loves the fact that wherever he goes, people treat him very specially. They always give him candy or cookies.”

The vice president also delighted in his wife’s involvement in promoting child literacy, telling NBC News, “It’s been amazing to see her really lean into this child literacy thing. And I think it speaks very highly of her.”

“Obviously, I’m very biased. But it’s definitely — it’s given us a new adventure to go on, and we’ve both had a good time,” he said.
