Jean-Pierre appears to confuse Nord Stream 1 pipeline with Nordstrom Rack and it’s hilarious

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was the source of great hilarity on Tuesday when she confused the Nord Stream 1 pipeline with Nordstrom, the department store chain.

She was taking a question during the daily press briefing about the shutdown of Nord Stream 1 – the main gas pipeline from Russia to Europe. Moscow has said it will not resume gas supplies to Europe until the West lifts its sanctions.

“So you’ve heard us say this: that what we see Russia is doing — we’ve been very clear about this — is that they’re using energy, they’re weaponizing energy,” Jean-Pierre said. “And it’s choosing to — one of the things that has been out there… the shutdown of the pipeline of Nord Strom 1.”

“So the sanction we’ve imposed, we believe, do stand in the way of the pipeline to continuing operating,” she added. “So the U.S. and Europe have been collaborating to ensure sufficient supplies are available. As a result of these efforts, European gas [storage] will be full by the critical winter heating season. So we have more work to do, but, again, we’re working closely with our allies on this.”

Richard Grenell, the former Acting Director of National Intelligence under President Trump, offered this take in a tweet: “There is *one* slight difference: @Nordstrom has excellent customer service. NS1 & 2 not so much, @K_JeanPierre.”

Sen. Ted Crux, R-Texas, added this zinger: “This was not a slip of the tongue. Biden gave it to Putin as a gift from Nordstrom’s.”

Here’s a sampling of more jocularity from Twitter:
