While it’s still early, a troubling trend in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nominee is taking place between supporters of Donald Trump and supporters of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — the embattled former president has officially announced his candidacy and DeSantis has not, but Team Trump clearly sees the popular governor as its top threat.
Nasty ads are flying between the camps, and a new ad out Sunday from the Never Back Down super PAC, which supports DeSantis, claims Trump is “stealing pages from the Biden-Pelosi playbook,” adding that he “should fight Democrats, not lie about Governor DeSantis.”
CNN weekend host Jim Acosta took note of the ad saying it sounds like something Democrats might run, which leaves one to wonder what he’s hearing. At the same time, it’s understandable that he would want to draw attention to supporters of the two GOP heavyweights trading blows.
“Donald Trump is being attacked by a Democrat prosecutor in New York. So why is he spending millions attacking the Republican governor of Florida?” the video states. “Trump’s stealing pages from the Biden-Pelosi playbook, repeating lies about Social Security. Trump should fight Democrats, not lie about Governor DeSantis. What happened to Donald Trump?”

“I mean, that almost looks like an ad that the Democrats might run against Donald Trump,” Acosta said of the line of attack.
The grassroots super PAC released an earlier ad blasting Trump ahead of his NRA address this weekend, calling the former president a “coward” and a “gun grabber.”
“Trump promised NRA members he’d have their back. But when Second Amendment rights came under attack, Trump abandoned us and stood with liberal Democrats,” the ad opens, and concludes by saying, “Trump the gun grabber doesn’t deserve a second chance.”.
The Trump campaign fired a salvo in response to the attack ads, pushing a familiar if not far-reaching claim that DeSantis is a globalist and wants to take away social security.
“DeSantis is colluding with his globalist handlers to go full Never Trump in order to gaslight the people into thinking that Medicare and Social Security should be ripped away from hard-working Americans,” spokesperson Steven Cheung said, according to Fox News. “President Trump has made it clear that he will always stand on the side of Americans, and protect benefits seniors worked for and paid for their entire lives.”
