Mainstream media outlets were quick to jump on the insult comic’s comments, which included calling Puerto Rico a “floating pile of trash” and racial quips. These jokes were used to further the hysteric narrative that Trump is hateful, racist, and other terrible things, but Stewart believes Hinchcliffe was just doing his job.

“For the media, there was one moment in particular that raised the alarms,” Stewart said, airing a series of clips where outlets, anchors, and pundits disparaged Hinchcliffe’s performance.

“Obviously, in retrospect, having a roast comedian come to a political rally a week before election day and roasting a key demographic – probably not the best decision by the campaign politically,” the late-night host said. “But to be fair, the guy’s just really doing what he does.”

“There’s something wrong with me. I find that guy very funny. I’m sorry, I don’t know what to tell you,” Stewart laughed.

Hinchcliffe had also attended the roast of Tom Brady, where his brand of comedy once again resulted in hot water after he joked about slavery and Jews while poking fun at attendees.

“Yes, yes, of course, terrible, boo,” Stewart chuckled.

“I mean, bringing him to a rally and having him not do roast jokes, that would be like bringing Beyonce to a rally and not having her- Oh,” he joked.

“But you know what, those people, those are just the underlings! And they brought a real dark, apocalyptic version of America to the stage. I’m sure former President Trump will temper those passions,” he continued, missing no opportunity to jab Trump.
