Former Vice President Kamala Harris may be done licking her electoral wounds, appearing to be taking a more serious look at her next political move.
Sources “familiar with the former vice president’s thinking” spoke to The Hill, reportedly revealing that Harris is looking more closely at the California gubernatorial race.
The sources claim that she isn’t ready to make a commitment regarding the race and is still looking at her potential options, but is dedicated to continuing her public service career. Since her 2024 loss to President Donald Trump, it has been suspected that Harris would likely jump back into California politics, replacing Gavin Newsom at the state’s helm. This has caused many to believe Newsom is being groomed by the Democratic Party for a larger role in national politics, perhaps a run for the presidency in the near future.
One of the sources claims that the prospect of entering the gubernatorial race has put “a glimmer in her eyes.”
“She has a lot of people in her ear telling her that it makes the most sense and she can do the most good,” said a source.
However, another source indicates that Harris might not be as interested in jumping in as some may have you believe.
“The source said the topic of the gubernatorial race is dominating many of the conversations she is having simply because of the fast-approaching 2026 match-up,” The Hill reports.
“Either way, the sources say Harris is sticking to a self-imposed end-of-summer deadline in deciding whether to wade into the already-crowded governor’s race, where the contest includes former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who was also a member of the Biden administration as secretary of Health and Human Services,” the article continues. “The former vice president is planning to take some time off in July, when sources say she hopes to further reflect on the next step in her political career.”
