Democrats have felt the absence of one high-profile name who has chosen to keep herself out of the spotlight.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has irritated leftists with her disappearing act, opting to hunker down in an oceanfront Malibu home costing an eye-popping $8 million, alongside her taxpayer-funded security team.
Despite claiming that she would not go “quietly into the night,” Harris had all but disappeared from public life in 2025. Some predicted that she was simply gearing up for another political run, perhaps for the California governorship, while others suspected that she was just fading away into obscurity following her embarrassing loss to Trump in 2024. The latter theory appeared to grow legs when her hometown of Los Angeles, California, faced several crises, but the former veep was nowhere to be seen.
“She’s not someone who likes being out and about. She doesn’t really want to engage with people in a way that isn’t already orchestrated,” explained a Dem consultant inside Harris’s circle. “But her absence has been really notable. And to some people, very offensive.”
Perhaps that is why, in January, when she returned to California after leaving the White House, she made little effort to appear for wildfire recovery events despite her own home in Brentwood being just miles from the devastating flames.
Then, in February, she established the “Office of Kamala D. Harris” website and signed with Creative Artists Agency.
“Many in Los Angeles progressive circles seemed increasingly resentful of Harris’ conscious lack of connection with a community beyond an unrepresentative corner of the city that one Democratic consultant in her orbit dismissively characterized as ‘Kamala’s Los Angeles,'” Politico reported.
“It’s not like she has time to walk around the parks all the time. But if I were advising her I would have been all over L.A. the last few months, just checking it out, feeling it, for the good and the bad,” the consultant said.
The purchase of the $8 million Malibu mansion has also created tension, with many noting that Harris is living off of taxpayer dollars, but doing nothing to give back to those footing her lifestyle.
Then, Politico reported, suddenly Harris popped back up like she had never been gone.
“In the past few weeks, she’s addressed the Democratic National Committee, weighed in on the Trump administration’s intervention in Venezuela, and spoke glowingly of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz after his decision to end his reelection campaign. Her political voice, quite suddenly, has returned,” the outlet noted.
It remains to be seen if she will join the frontlines of the fight against Trump, even just as a way to get her foot in the door for 2028, or if she will continue to sporadically involve herself in politics until her eventual retirement.
