A video clip featuring Vice President Kamala Harris interacting with French scientists at a COVID-19 lab in Paris went viral this week after critics panned her for using what appeared to some to be a “French accent.”

In the clip, Harris is touring the Institut Pasteur on Monday and talking with a group of researchers about cooperation between France and the United States in the field of science.

During her interactions, Harris suggested that politicians operate more deliberately as scientists do. She also made comments about how politicians should operate more like scientists.

“One of the things people in politics and government should really take from the approach of scientists- scientists operate with a hypothesis. I love that,” Harris noted on Monday. “A hypothesis- it’s well-thought-out, it’s well-planned, they start out with a hypothesis and then they test it out knowing invariably, you’re trying something for the first time, there will be glitches, there will be mistakes.

“Then everyone gets together, no one gets beat up about it, you analyze it- what went wrong, reevaluate, update the hypothesis and start again,” Harris, who toured the facility with second gentleman Doug Emhoff, continued.

At that, Harris then moved on to discuss how politicians operate, derisively noting that they still to “The Plan” that they campaigned on, appearing to change the inflection and dialect of her voice each time she used the phrase.

“In government, we campaign with ‘The Plan,’” Harris said. “Uppercase T, uppercase P, ‘The Plan!’ And then the environment is such we’re expected to defend ‘The Plan’ even when the first time we roll it out there may be some glitches and it’s time to reevaluate and then do it again,” she said.

Her change of dialect was panned as “cringe” online.

“Is she using a FRENCH ACCENT?!” noted Abigail Marone, who is the press secretary for Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.). “I love this episode of Veep.”

Harris’ visit to France comes amid a diplomatic rift between Paris and Washington after the United States entered into an agreement with the United Kingdom and Australia to build a half-dozen nuclear-powered submarines for Canberra. Earlier, Australia and France had made an agreement in principle that the former would buy 12 diesel-powered submarines from Paris; that deal was shelved in favor of the U.S.-UK agreement, which was part of a new Indo-Pacific security arrangement that seeks to counter a rising China.

Canceling the agreement angered France and led Paris to recall its U.S. ambassador for the first time; Harris’ visit is, in part, an attempt to repair the relationship between the historic allies.

But her own credibility may also be an issue. Harris’ trip comes on the heels of new polling data showing hers and President Joe Biden’s approval ratings tanking to the lowest of their young administration.

The survey, released Sunday by USA Today and Suffolk University, found Biden’s approval rating had cratered to just 38 percent, but it was worse for Harris — a shockingly low 28 percent.

“Nearly half of those surveyed, 46%, say Biden has done a worse job as president than they expected, including 16% of those who voted for him. Independents, by 7-1 (44%-6%), say he’s done worse, not better, than they expected,” USA Today reported.

“Vice President Kamala Harris’ approval rating is 28% – even worse than Biden’s. The poll shows that 51% disapprove of the job she’s doing. One in 5, 21%, are undecided,” the paper continued.
