Former Vice President Kamala Harris wants black people to believe that she’s down with the struggle but apparently isn’t keen about living among them.
The failed Democratic presidential candidate is drawing scrutiny for the location of her new multimillion-dollar crib, which is in an area nearly devoid of the diversity she has long championed.
The 4,000-square-foot property for which she reportedly shelled out $8.15 million is located in Point Dume, a swanky seaside community on the Malibu coast which, according to a Fox News report, “includes ocean views, multiple wine fridges, private golf greens and enough parking to accommodate five vehicles.”

“Point Dume is situated entirely within Census tract 8004.08, which the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey estimated was just 0.2% Black and roughly 94% White as of 2019,” according to the report.
“Harris’ choice of neighborhood may surprise longtime observers given past comments she has made about the importance of living among other Black Americans,” writes Fox News Digital’s Robert Schmad.

The former veep talked about the personal impact of diversity on her life in a 2019 interview with a Washington Post reporter, recalling how she grew up in mostly white areas and wasn’t truly immersed in a heavily black area until she went to college at Howard University, a historically black college in the nation’s capital, a predominantly black city.
“When you’re at (a historically Black college or university), and especially one with the size and with the history of Howard University — and also in the context of also being in D.C., which was known forever as being ‘Chocolate City’ — it just becomes about you understanding that there is a whole world of people who are like you,” Harris said in comments resurfaced by Fox News.
“It was more, for me, about the numerosity than it was the diversity, I grew up in a community where there were many representations of diversity,” the former vice president added. “Going to Howard, there were so many (Black people)! And they’re all in your age group, in your phase of life.”
But it’s hard to find a less diverse area than Point Dume, which has been accused of keeping black people off its beaches, with Fox News reporting on a 2025 review by a pair of non-white surfers who said: “Despite the veneer of a laid back community of surfers who are one with nature, there are barriers to access that keep most BIPOC people away.”
Harris isn’t the only notable Democrat of color who has chosen to live in an overwhelmingly white area. Former President Barack Obama famously owns an estate on Martha’s Vineyard, which will never be mistaken for the hood.
Some have suggested that the Asian-Jamaican Democrat has only cynically played up her blackness for political reasons.
“I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now, she wants to be known as black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she black?” President Donald J. Trump said of his opponent at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago in August 2024.
Look for Harris to once again play up her blackness during an imminent 2028 presidential run, which just got a boost from the DNC, which voted to keep South Carolina and its heavily black electorate first on the primary schedule.
