Social media users ripped Vice President Kamala Harris for what felt like an insincere statement following an attempted assassination of her rival.
In the wake of a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, Harris issued a short statement that many felt spoke volumes in its brevity.
“I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe,” she said in a post on the VP’s official X account, time-stamped 3:42 p.m.
Notably, Harris did not refer to the breaking news as any kind of assassination attempt.
“Violence has no place in America,” she simply added in the post viewed over 9.5 million times.

Hours later, Harris would issue a full statement that was posted online. But it seemed too little, too late for many Americans on X.
Minutes after her first reaction post, X users torched the Democrat nominee.
You’re so full of shit, you’re not glad he is safe—It is your rhetoric that has caused this, AGAIN!!!!! https://t.co/2gOfNsFTU6

Your radical language has helped create this targeting of Trump by unstable people.
You don’t get to call him a threat to democracy and then act like you don’t know why people are resorting to violence to stop the threat.
You should tell your team to knock it off -… https://t.co/Ew8MehkOUb

You called him a threat to democracy and a day 1 dictator. You own this.

You keep telling Americans he’s a danger to our democracy.
You keep telling Americans he wants to be a dictator.Your rhetoric is nothing but violence, Kamala.

This is on you and your evil rhetoric.

Either the candidate is Hitler and a literal threat to the existence of America or violence has no place in America.
You cannot have it both ways.
And America knows it.

Your lies and the lies of your party and your media have done this. You are responsible.

“I am deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today,” Harris said in a statement hours later.
“As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more to violence,” she added.

This lit the fire again on X where users showed the Democrat and her party no mercy.
“I condemn the political violence that I incited by calling my opponent a nazi for the past 8 years”

Don’t act like you care. Your rhetoric caused this.
— Joey Mannarino (@JoeyMannarinoUS) September 16, 2024
This latest assassination attempt is a direct result of your rhetoric claiming Trump is Hitler 2.0.
YOU are encouraging assassins with your hate and lies.
— Cynical Publius (@CynicalPublius) September 16, 2024
Maybe stop incessantly calling Trump the “greatest threat to democracy” and maybe stop gaslighting and lying to the American people painting Trump as something he’s not using propaganda and hateful rhetoric.
That would be a nice start to stopping this division.
— Lucy Riles (@LucyRiles) September 16, 2024
Don’t act shocked, Kamala
You go on and on about how Trump is a threat to democracy and how he’s Hitler 2.0
Why are you pretending to be surprised that your supporters have been radicalized to take action because of those very words?
