Karma comes calling: Sportswriter who wanted NHL player canceled over Pride jersey is herself canceled

The oversaturation of “woke” commentary continues to drive staffing cuts at media outlets that are seeing severely diminished demand for their product during uncertain times and in an epically “poetic” bit of karma, a sportswriter who called for the cancellation of NHL player Ivan Provorov has herself been canceled.

Provorov, a Russian defenseman who plays for the Philadelphia Flyers has been savaged by leftists over his refusal to wear a “Pride” jersey in honor of a very special demographic during the pregame skate at the team’s home game against the visiting Anaheim Ducks last week and one of those calling for his head on a pike was Steph Driver, formerly of SB Nation’s Broad Street Hockey.

“I was hoping what I heard about Provorov wasn’t true, but it has been confirmed,” Driver tweeted after the news broke of the player’s defiance. “Ivan Provorov did not participate in the Flyers pregame skate because he refused to wear the Pride jersey. In the year 2023. Provorov couldn’t have a rainbow logo touch his skin for a few minutes.”

“Ivan Provorov was allowed to play in a game for the Philadelphia Flyers – the organization that was the first to say that you will be removed from the arena if you utter a homophobic slur – after refusing to wear a Pride logo for warm ups,” she added. “What an absolute disgrace.”

On Friday, the intolerant writer took to Twitter to update her 12.1 K followers of the bad news that she was among those jettisoned by Vox Media which is slashing staff by 7 percent.

“Today I have been laid off. I always thought I would leave Vox and SB Nation of my own accord, but today they chose to move away from hockey coverage,” Driver wrote. “I don’t know what is next for me, I’m a little shellshocked tbh, but here we are. Steph Driver is on the market.”

There understandably wasn’t a heck of a lot of sympathy for Driver whose hateful reaction to Provorov’s conviction to his devout religious beliefs didn’t make her into a very sympathetic character with Twitter users.

“Poetic ,” remarked digital strategist Greg Price along with an emoji of a sad violin.

“If you’re not a Philly sports fan, a website called Broad Street Hockey full of annoying woke bloggers had their whole staff laid off by Vox today. I hope they enjoy making solar panels,” he added in another tweet.

Other users piled on, clearly relishing the karmic overtones of Driver’s newly unemployed status a mere three days after she called for Provorov to lose his job.

Provorov, who cited his devout religious faith as the reason for not participating, quickly found out that when it comes to contempt for free speech and freedom of religion that Putin has nothing on the American left.

But while the likes of Driver and her fellow “woke” ilk demanded reprisals in the latest version of Orwells Two Minutes Hate, a funny thing happened as a new fan club immediately sprang up for the previously obscure Russian players with his replica jerseys selling like hotcakes.

Sadly for Driver and her fellow leftist media hacks, its looking like time to reinvent themselves for more productive careers.
