LA schools quietly drop mandatory gender identity loyalty pledge

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has officially abandoned requirements for teachers to “affirm and respect” student “identities.”

Annual cultural competency training for supporting LGBTQ students is required for teachers in California, according to the state’s Department of Education. This includes a mandatory checkbox that reads, “I am aware that LAUSD policy requires me to affirm and respect the identities of all students, including those who identify as LGBTQ+,” as revealed by legal non-profit The Liberty Counsel.

The organization announced on Friday that it had fired off a letter to the school district that claims such prompting violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“Federal law protects employees from being compelled to choose between their employment and adherence to their faith,” they pointed out.

Just two days after receiving this letter, the LAUSD modified the prompt to remove the “affirm and respect” language, which has been replaced with a question about whether they are “aware” of nondiscrimination policies regarding LGBTQ students.

“When LAUSD implemented a mandatory LGBTQ training, I feared losing my job, yet I knew I had to stand firm in my faith and conviction,” one LAUSD sixth-grade teacher said, according to statements released by The Liberty Counsel. “What a victory for religious liberty! Thank you, Liberty Counsel, for courageously defending the rights of believers and helping ensure that people of faith can remain true to their convictions in the workplace.”

“The Los Angeles Unified School District did the right thing in changing its training certification language. Federal law is clear that teachers cannot be required to ‘affirm’ a student’s perceived gender identity or use inconsistent pronouns against their personal religious convictions. Title VII ensures that people cannot be forced to choose between their faith and their livelihood,” said Liberty Counsel Chairman Mat Staver.
