A Democrat New York City mayoral candidate revealed his ill-conceived plan to reduce price gouging by getting the government involved.
New York State Representative Zohran Mamdani explained his socialist strategy in a video where he declared that grocery prices “are out of control.” He accused some stores of using “dynamic pricing” as they are “jacking up the cost over the course of the day.”
The solution, according to the progressive lawmaker who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is a “network” of government-owned and run grocery stores.

“As mayor, I will create a network of city-owned grocery stores. It’s like a public option for produce,” he said. “We will redirect city funds from corporate supermarkets to city-owned grocery stores whose mission is lower prices, not price gouging.”
“These stores will operate without a profit motive, or having to pay property taxes or rent” Mamdani continued, “and will pass on those savings to you.”
Mamdani moved to New York City from Uganada with his family at the age of 7. The 33-year-old far-left lawmaker has represented New York’s 36th district in Queens since 2021 and is now running, along with disgraced ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, in the 2025 mayoral race.
If Mamdani is familiar-looking, it may be because he made headlines recently for shouting at border czar Tom Homan.

“How many more New Yorkers will you detain? How many more New Yorkers without charge?” he shouted at the State Capitol. “Do you believe in the First Amendment, Tom Homan?”
Just days after Hamas terrorists attacked Israel on Oct. 7, the socialist was arrested outside Sen. Chuck Schumer’s house during a pro-Palestinian rally.
His latest idea for government-controlled grocery stores was met with swift reactions on social media.
Other than breadlines, starvation, and famine… great!
