Veteran “60 Minutes” journalist Scott Pelley finally pushed his luck too far and now finds himself unemployed after a clash with his new boss in a staff meeting, the final straw for management, which pulled the plug on his storied career.
Pelley made no secret of his contempt for CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss, whom he accused of being brought in to “murder” the network’s Sunday evening flagship. In a flagrant act of disrespect, he unloaded on new “60 Minutes” Executive Producer Nick Bilton in the Monday meeting.
“In the extraordinary back and forth, an impassioned Pelley relentlessly pressed Bilton on Weiss’ intentions for the storied newsmagazine, pointed out that he has no relevant experience to helm television’s most prestigious news program, grilled Bilton on what he knew about the firings, and more,” former CNN talking head Oliver Darcy reported on his Status blog after the fateful meeting.
On Tuesday, Bilton fired Pelley “with cause” over his conduct, an act of insubordination that wouldn’t be tolerated in most organizations.

“Yesterday’s performative display of hostility enacted in front of the staff instead of in a civil, private conversation demonstrated that you have no interest in contributing to the future success of the show, or approaching my new tenure with a mind open to collaboration and progress,” Bilton wrote in a letter to the fired journo informing Pelley “your employment with CBS is terminated for cause effective immediately.
The longtime newsman and former CBS Evening News anchor reacted to his sacking with a blistering statement in which he accused management of ordering him to “inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story.”
Pelley fired off a lengthy statement on his way out the door, blasting his now former bosses for “incompetence and unprofessionalism” while praising “60 Minutes” as an American institution and “the most successful program of any kind in history.”
BRUTAL indictment of @bariweiss by Scott Pelley:
“For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified.” Then it gets worse… https://t.co/aqeCgLNcKA pic.twitter.com/SZkcaiHFG5— Tommy Vietor (@TVietor08) June 3, 2026
“Last month, 60 Minutes lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause,” Pelley wrote. “Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos.”
“For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified,” he continued. “To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them. Recently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast. Giving politicians control over 60 Minutes interviews is not how this is done.”
“Finally, incompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management have wreaked havoc. In a case involving one of my stories, the entire program came within 19 minutes of not getting on the air at all,” Pelley said, not offering specifics on which story that he was referring to.
According to an X post from Washington Post national security reporter John Hudson, the politician whom Pelley referred to is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was recently interviewed for the program.
Pelley drew criticism last year when he used his platform during a commencement address at Wake Forest University to defend discriminatory DEI and to attack President Donald J. Trump.
