Mamdani accuses Cuomo of ‘disqualifying’ collusion with Trump: ‘A betrayal of our city’

New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani responded to a disputed New York Times report about opponent Andrew Cuomo colluding with President Donald J. Trump, calling it a “betrayal of our city.”

According to the Times, Trump is mulling whether to get involved in the mayoral race to help defeat the Muslim socialist and spoke with the former Democratic governor over the phone — Cuomo entered the race as an independent after Mamdani became the Democratic nominee for mayor.

“Today we learned Andrew Cuomo is directly coordinating with Donald Trump, even as this President sends masked agents to rip our neighbors off the streets and guts the social services so many New Yorkers rely on,” Mamdani said in a post shared on the social media platform X. “It’s disqualifying and a betrayal of our city.”

“It is Trump billionaires who have been opposing our campaign’s vision for a city that New Yorkers can afford,” Mamdani told reporters. “It is Donald Trump himself who has been directly conspiring with candidates who have decided to give up the people that they are supposed to protect in lieu of securing power through the assistance of that same administration in Washington, D.C.”

Rich Azzopardi, a spokesman for Cuomo’s campaign, denied the Times report.

“The Governor and the President have not spoken in some time,” Azzopardi said, adding, “As far as I know, they have not discussed the race.”

Cuomo also disputed the report during a press conference, saying he has “never spoken to [Trump] about the mayor’s race.”

“I can’t remember the last time I spoke to President Trump,” he said.

Trump, a former New Yorker, said last month he believes Cuomo “would have a good shot” at defeating Mamdani in a race that also features incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

Social media users had little sympathy for Mamdani’s angst over Trump potentially getting involved — here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
