Instead of addressing exploding homelessness in his city, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is mulling whether to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu.
The mayor is reportedly “still weighing” whether he can arrest the Israeli prime minister when he arrives for the United Nations General Assembly, and is in “active conversation” with authorities regarding the matter.
“I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in the Hague,” he said to The New York Times. “He’s a war criminal who has been charged by the International Criminal Court.”
“And what you will find is that is an opinion that is held by many, purely because of what his actions have wrought over these last many years,” he added.
While he’s unsure if he has the authority to order Netanyahu’s arrest, he says he will be as aggressive as he is allowed to be.
“Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that’s what we will do, but we won’t be writing our own laws to that end,” he said.
X users reacted to Mamdani’s priorities:
How’s he not gonna be in violation of diplomatic immunity 🥴

Causing an international incident by doing something you have absolute zero power in doing, all to appease your Reddit & Twitch voters. This should go well.

Since he has diplomatic immunity, the only one going to jail would be Mamdani.

Give us a break. Even he knows better than that. He has no authority to do this and he himself could be arrested for trying.

Mamdani thinks he can have people arrested who haven’t broken any laws because some fake international tribunal doesn’t like them.

Mamdani: Defund the police…unless you need the police to arrest someone you despise.
Respect the rule of law…unless the courts haven’t prosecuted the person you want punished, in which case arrest him anyway.

Mamdani has dx Delusional disorder. He needs to be referred to a psychiatrist.

Regardless of what you think of netanyahu, this would be a gross overstep. A mayor (or nys) has no authority to arrest a head of state, huge impingement on federal authority. Two, even without that, the US doesn’t recognize rome statute/icc, so nothing to charge him with.

So he does support arresting people. Just people of his interest.
