New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani has outraged critics with his decision to meet with a controversial Muslim figure.
The socialist candidate sat down with Brooklyn Imam Siraj Wahhaj, whom he called “one of the nation’s foremost Muslim leaders and a pillar of the Bed-Stuy community for nearly half a century,” in an X post about the meeting.
Look:
Today at Masjid At-Taqwa, I had the pleasure of meeting with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, one of the nation’s foremost Muslim leaders and a pillar of the Bed-Stuy community for nearly half a century. I was also joined by CM @dr_yusefsalaam of Harlem. A beautiful Jummah. pic.twitter.com/4kcN4CGlUk

Critics wasted no time in pouncing on the images. Leading the charge was Mamdani’s opponent in the race, Andrew Cuomo.
“[Mamdani] is proud to be standing with an unindicted co-conspirator in the 93 World Trade Center terror attack that killed New Yorkers?” the former governor asked, according to the New York Post. “The same person who preaches radical hate toward the LGBTQ community, just weeks after Mamdani was caught posing with a family-friend Ugandan politician who passed a law sentencing gay people to jail for life? When people tell you who they are, you should believe them — and Zohran, wipe that smile off your face.”
Independent journalist Andy Ngo also filled in some of the gaps in a response to Mamdani’s post.

“Imam Siraj Wahhaj was a co-conspirator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing jihadist attack who escaped justice. In 2023, his son and two daughters were convicted at trial for their role in planning Islamic terror attacks while living in an Islamic separatist compound in New Mexico. They killed a young child there,” he wrote.
X users dogpiled the post:
Wow. You just mocking us all now huh?
