Gotham’s mayor appeared more than willing to incentivize as a means to stop the city from hemorrhaging taxpayers, as one of the wealthiest neighborhoods prepared for “free” services.
As with all communists, the reality of governance marked a stark contrast from the campaign trail for New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) after he plied voters with all sorts of taxpayer-funded programs like free buses. Now, weeks after proposing a massive tax hike to cover the budget, plans to open a government childcare center on the Upper East Side are getting attention as a means to “persuade” the wealthy from jumping ship.
“There is perhaps no street in New York City where the promise and peril of Mr. Mamdani’s vow to expand the social safety net for all New Yorkers is on starker display that this stretch of the Upper East Side,” contended the New York Times as the planned East 65th Street location for a “free” childcare center nearby a restaurant where a cheeseburger costs $34. “The mayor’s allies argue that child care should be a collective good, akin to Social Security or public education, and that making it available to all New Yorkers will create the kind of buy-in that will help the system flourish.”
“They also say that wealthy New Yorkers, who pay some of the highest taxes in the nation, should be able to see a return in the form of more free services. That, in turn, could persuade them to stay in the city and continue to contribute to its financial health,” added the report.
Following the February announcement of the Upper East Side plans, Mamdani held a press conference Monday near City Hall at the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, which would be the site of another childcare center.
A New York Post op-ed by Capital Public Strategies president David Catalfamo addressed the costs of the touted center, including $10 million in renovations and $2.3 million in annual operations costs to benefit a mere 40 children.”That’s roughly $57,500 per child each year, more than double what many private child-care providers charge in New York. Thousands of private day-care providers across New York operate safely and legally at half this cost or less — and none of them were gifted with $10 million renovation jobs inside government office buildings.”
As previously reported, Mamdani floated plans to raise property taxes by nearly 10% to cover the city’s $5.4 billion budget gap after failing to convince the state to raise taxes on corporations and the “ultra-wealthy.”

The Daily Mail pointed out that residents of the Upper East Side locale, where a planned childcare center would accommodate about 130 kids, make an average of $200,000 per year.
“Nobody in my neighborhood was saying we should come ahead of really needy neighborhoods,” Community Board 8 chair Valerie Mason, representative of the Upper East Side, told the Times. “But in my book, universal means universal.”
That statement was seemingly contradicted in the release announcing the center, as New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin (D) said, “This is a big win for families in our district. Community Board 8 and I have been pushing for this center to open because parents were promised high-quality, accessible early childhood seats, and they deserve nothing less.”
Of course, while Mamdani promoted his plan, insisting, “Universal childcare can’t wait. We’re launching 3,000+ new 2-K and 3-K seats, and we need to hear from you. Take the NYC Parent Survey and tell us what your family actually needs,” some couldn’t help but think about the rampant fraud exposed in other leftist havens.
How many “Quality Learing Centers” are you going to open up in NYC, Zohran?

#anotheruselesspolitician doubling down on stupidity as he openly acknowledged he does not have the funding to support all of his pet projects and will have to raise taxes on everyone. Next he will attempt to nationalize businesses and send people to the gulag.
