Democrat New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration has renewed a $1.86 billion “emergency” contract for Big Apple hotels to provide shelter for the city’s homeless population.
In a move that keeps productive citizens on the hook to backstop the slothful, Hizzoner’s regime re-upped its commitment with a three-year deal with the Hotel Association of New York City Foundation, an organization that represents around 300 hotels across Gotham’s five boroughs. The contract runs from July 1 through June 30, 2029.

“Over the last 15 years, DHS [Department of Homeless Services] has faced numerous crises which have forced DHS to rely on commercial hotels to temporarily house clients,” a city spokesperson said, according to the New York Post.
“DHS is focused not only on upholding New York City’s right to shelter but improving outcomes for all the New Yorkers we serve,” the city spox added. “As such, we continue to work to transform the city’s shelter system by opening new, high-quality shelters while gradually phasing out the use of commercial hotels for families with children.”
“But the city has to continue to maintain capacity during the transition under ‘Right to Shelter Laws’ which mandate access for anyone seeking shelter in the city. There were 82,929 adults and children in Big Apple shelters as of July 31, according to the department,” the Post reported.
It is unclear how many of the homeless who will be put up on the taxpayer dime are illegal aliens. Tens of thousands of the impoverished and indolent flocked to NYC during the Biden administration with the city’s freebies acting as a magnet for freeloading foreigners.
“The contract is for emergencies not migrants, and allows capacity to be created as-needed and the budget depends on that need,” Hotel Association president and CEO Vijay Dandapani said in March, according to the Post.
“Long term DHS is committed to phasing out the use of commercial hotels. However, until such time that DHS can secure sufficient contracted purposed built shelters, DHS will continue to need commercial hotel capacity to meet the legally mandated requirement to provide shelter,” the city states on its website.

“The mission of DHS is to prevent homelessness when possible and to provide short-term emergency shelter for individuals and families who have no other housing options available. DHS primarily meets this goal by providing services to clients in long-term contracted purpose-built shelters throughout the City. When there are not enough available shelter beds and units in traditional shelters, DHS temporarily uses commercial hotels to house clients while they transition to permanent housing,” the city’s website states.
